Los Alamos National Laboratory Water Distribution System Engineer in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for an exceptional Water Distribution System Engineer 2 to join our team within the Engineering Services Utilities and Infrastructure (ES-UI) Group. ES-UI is seeking an individual with engineering design skills to support the expanding LANL mission. The Laboratory has a footprint of over 42 square miles with extensive infrastructure including building sites, roads, transportation structures and miles of utility lines running throughout the laboratory. This position will primarily support the potable and firewater distribution system, operation, and maintenance program. The selected candidate will work as part of the Utility Engineering Team designing, maintaining and upgrading utility infrastructure. Engineering design work will include development of plan and profile drawings, new tie-in requests, system modifications and configuration management, system modeling (static and dynamic), and miscellaneous design projects and studies. Successful candidate will also develop design details, calculations, equipment data sheets, specifications, etc. that incorporate the applicable design requirements. The successful candidate will interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer during the development of the design, and be part of the team observing the construction and turnover of assigned projects.

Water Distribution System Engineer 2 ($94,100 - $155,700)

  • Apply industry recognized standards AWWA, NFPA, industry codes and standards, and applicable LANL engineering standards to the LANL Utility Water Distribution System. Develop Standards and specifications for inclusion in the LANL Engineering Standards Manual, Master Specifications, Standard Drawings, and Operations and Maintenance Manual.

  • Repond to and resolve operation and maintenance issues with engineering solutions that meet applicable codes and standards. Ensure expectations are established and met. Ensure maintenance instructions/checklists are currently in the UI preventive maintenance program. Periodically, conduct in-field observations of maintenance work.

  • Perform conventional design, analysis, and static and dynamic system modeling.

  • Performs drawings and specifications for various water projects including facility water line tie-ins and new water line installations.

  • Demonstrates understanding of Water Distribution Systems and a willingness to learn.

  • Review and comment on engineering designs/studies/assessments by LANL Engineering Project Delivery and other AE firms. Ensure that all comments are adequately addressed to ensure reliable and safe LANL UI Infrastructure Systems.

  • Accountable for providing accurate, safe and cost effective engineering design that provides reliable service. All work shall adhere to Laboratory safety and security policies. Accountable to peers in UI to provide SME Expertise as an integrated team member. Effectively communicate with the lead Water Distribution Engineer, fellow UI team members, LANL workers, DOE/NNSA, outside government agencies, and LANL subcontractors.

  • Individually or with a Team, perform field work (i.e.; site visits, construction site walkdowns, construction inspection assistance, for example), as needed.

  • Review and approve vendor submittals and design modifications as required for project completion and other duties as assigned.

  • Works under limited direction; receives general instruction on new assignments. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

  • Determines approaches to solutions, plans schedule, work with Water distribution system engineer in accomplishing objectives.

  • Prepares documents, studies, calculations, and reports associated with the Water Distribution System.

  • Establish and maintain technical baseline requirements to ensure the safe and reliable operations, maintenance and construction for the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Water Distribution System.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in design engineering or system engineering in utility or industrial system operations.

  • Demonstrated experience with applicable industry codes and standards.

  • Demonstrated experience in commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance of a similar system(s).

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbal.

  • Demonstrated experience with Bentley Water Gems or other similar modeling platform, to include hydraulic analysis and modeling.

  • Demonstrated experience with Auto Cad or other drafting platforms.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (or other related engineering discipline) from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge and experience with other related utility disciplines, such as Sanitary Wastewater and Storm Water Systems.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing and directing the work of others.

  • Demonstrated experience in project management.

  • Demonstrated experience with preparing and managing budgets and having fiscal responsibility for projects and programs.

  • Knowledge of LANL Conduct of Engineering Program and DOE Orders and Standards applicable to Water Distribution System design and implementation.

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification - or certification that the candidate has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Professional Engineer registration desirable.
