Los Alamos National Laboratory Tax and Retirement Accountant 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Accountant 2 in the Controller Division. In this role you will have the opportunity to be a member of the Tax and Retirement Accounting (CNTL-TT) Group, Retirement Accounting Team, supporting the accounting operations for the Triad and LLNS Pension and 401(k) retirement plans.
The selected candidate will report to the CNTL-TT group leader and support the group mission by managing the proper accounting treatment of financial activities related to the retirement plans and plan investments. This includes preparing financial reports, analysis, and assisting in the preparation of year-end financial statements, reviewing investment valuations, managing the payment process for plan expenses, and assisting with the biweekly process to ensure timely and accurate remittance of retirement plan withholdings. The successful candidate will work with other interrelated internal departments such as Payroll, HR-Benefits, Finance and Systems, as well plan service providers such as investment consultants, legal counsel, the plan trustee/custodian and auditors in support of the administration of the Triad and LLNS retirement plans.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Working knowledge of accounting concepts and principles to include General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and proper application of internal controls. Professional experience analyzing and applying accounting policy and pronouncements. Experience developing and maintaining accounting controls, analyzing and interpreting data, identifying trends and reporting results to management.
Ability to conduct research in accounting and business issues and offer informed opinions and alternatives. Ability to identify opportunities for continuous improvement in business processes and internal controls and taking action to implement solutions. Demonstrated knowledge and experience researching, gathering, analyzing data, summarizing results, resolving problems and issues both independently and as a team member.
Customer Service, Organization, Teamwork and Dependability
Demonstrated ability to work independently while maintaining excellent organization and prioritization with proven ability to follow through completion on multiple tasks, often under strict deadlines, frequent interruptions, and changing priorities. Demonstrated ability in providing strong customer service and interpersonal skills; proven ability in effectively working within a team environment and interacting and networking with all levels of internal and external personnel and customers.
Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated proficient use of computer software applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Experience with retirement plan and trust related accounting and reporting and financial statement preparation. Experience with investments including valuation methods, net asset value calculations and fair value measurements.
MBA, Masters in Accountancy or advanced degree in a related field

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. Employee participation in the Telework Pilot may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.
