What You Will Do
The Deputy Group Leader of the Fluid Dynamics and Solid Mechanics Group (T-3) is a member of the Theoretical Division’s leadership team, and will partner with the T-3 Group Leader in providing technical leadership and management to the group. The Deputy Group Leader (DGL) will report to the Group Leader and will assist and complement the Group Leader in ensuring effective program execution and sound fiscal management, stimulating program development activities, promoting personnel development, and performing administrative tasks. The position is funded at 50% with the expectation that for the other 50%, the successful candidate will conduct funded research activities that are in alignment with the capabilities and direction of the group .
The Fluid Dynamics and Solid Mechanics Group (T-3) in the Theoretical Division develops and delivers world-class capabilities in theoretical, applied, and computational fluid dynamics and solid mechanics to support national security. T-3 has been a national and international leader in Computational Fluid Dynamics since the group's creation in the 1950's. Today T-3 is actively developing multiscale methods and algorithms for exascale computing for the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) and for National Nuclear Security Applications.
The group includes approximately 35 Ph.D. and staff scientists and approximately 30 postdoctoral fellows with a total budget of $28M. The group maintains and develops strong modeling and simulation capabilities in fluid and solid mechanics for earth systems including atmosphere, ocean, land, sea ice, biogeochemistry and their coupling, as well as for weapons systems including reactive compressible turbulent flow, manufacturing and materials sciences, and engineering. The group is funded in large part by support from the DOE Office of Science Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program, NNSA Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program and Exascale Computing Project (ECP). Additional efforts are funded by Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD), non-proliferation, DoD and NASA programs.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated scientific accomplishment and expertise in one or more technical areas of the group.
A record of successfully recruiting, mentoring, and retaining excellent students and post-docs
Experience effectively managing financial and human resources with commitment to diversity and inclusion, staff career development, and mentorship of junior staff.
Evidence of excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written, technical and non-technical), including the ability to effectively communicate with staff and management across multiple levels and organizations, as well as resolve conflicts.
Active DOE Q Clearance or the ability to obtain one in a reasonable timeframe.
Education/Experience :A Ph.D. in engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of DOE, DoD, and/or other internal and external programs of relevance to the Theoretical Division and the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Simulation and Computation (ALDSC).
Demonstrated success in leadership of R&D project or team culminating in technical products, software, or actionable outcomes.
Demonstrated success in proposing, developing, and sustaining research programs that attract support from NNSA Defense and Non-Proliferation programs, DOE Office of Science, Nuclear Energy, Applied Energy, LDRD, DoD, or private industry.
Demonstrated experience in building collaborative relationships across organizations and/or institutions.
Experience with administrative, personnel, budget, and/or programmatic business systems and procedures.
