Los Alamos National Laboratory Summer Internship - Detonator Production - Manufacturing in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Exciting opportunities exist in the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP), specifically in Detonator Production Division. This Undergraduate Intern position will collaborate with other Detonator Production Technicians, in the Detonator Production Manufacturing Group, to conduct technician assignments with specific responsibilities in the areas of inert and/or high explosive component and detonator manufacturing production. Scope will be focused on learning and application of detonator component manufacturing for the in the DP-MFG Group, in close collaboration with DP- Engineering (DP-ENG).

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Education: Min. GPA of 3.0

  • Collaboration: Work other technicians to become familiar with the production process

  • Coachable: Demonstrated ability to positively take direction, read and follow written and verbal instructions, procedures, plans, emergency, safeguards, and security procedures.

  • Attention to Detail: Attention to detail to meet quality standards

  • Dexterity : Ability to work with small fragile parts.

  • Security: Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” clearance which typically requires US citizenship.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.

  • Excellent communication skills promoting a positive, professional, and ethical work behavior with peers.

Education:

Majoring in a relevant Associate Degree program, HS+1. Will need to provide proof of enrollment and will need to maintain full time equivalency enrollment.

Essential Job Functions (Can perform with or without reasonable accommodation:

Work Environment:

Work with in an office and field environment with the ability to perform inspections during installations and project execution. Requiring safety glasses, hard hat protection, and laboratory coats

This position will be physically located in Los Alamos , NM (Onsite).

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

Specifically, the Detonator Production Division is located at the foot of the Jemez Mountains, minutes from the Valles Caldera and is part of the Manhattan Project National Park. The successful candidate for DP-ENG will report directly to the First Line Manager (FLM) and collaborate closely with colleagues to gain and share knowledge. The purpose of the internship will be to gain knowledge using various production engineering techniques and methodologies.

Additional Details

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
