Los Alamos National Laboratory Startup Specialist 4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Maintains required safety and security training, assures safety and security compliance, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security. Responsibility for worker safety on the project enforcing a zero accidents philosophy.

The successful candidate will:

  • Plan and conduct work requiring the evaluation, selection, application, adaptation, and modification to systems, structures, and components that require startup, maintenance, operation, or testing.

  • Provide direction to engineers, technicians, crafts or others as assigned for specific projects or tasks.

  • Develop and implement approved procedures and project startup/commissioning plans.

  • Document all aspects of commissioning including necessary materials, personnel, and vendor support as required by the project scope of work.

  • Be responsible for the completion of all required facility system walk downs.

  • Coordinate startup activities with project management, engineering, construction, safety engineers, subcontract personnel, facility operations, and others as warranted.

  • Prepare, review, and implement system startup and operations procedures, manuals, and related documents. This would include procedures for facility startup, initial operation of process systems, and other specific procedures as needed.

  • Conduct on-the-job training of owner’s personnel.

  • Be responsible to ensure all startup personnel and subcontractors adhere to all jobsite safety rules.

  • Adhere to policies and programs concerning the Associate Laboratory Directorate, Capital Projects (ALDCP) organization.

  • Research, assemble, and/or evaluate information or data regarding industry practices or applicable regulatory changes affecting LANL policies or programs; recommends sound, practical solutions to complex issues.

  • Prepare and administer subcontracts for specialty contractors (i.e. Test and Balance, Process Controls).

  • Foster a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

What You Need

Location: This position will be physically located inLos Alamos.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Responsible for safety leadership, accident prevention, and implementing a Zero Accidents philosophy.

  • Assumes a lead role over other Startup staff for specific tasks as assigned. May direct overall startup activities on specific assignments.

  • Directs and monitors assigned project startup and operations which may include review of design for operability, preparation of operations manuals, and coordination with construction during field check out and pre-commissioning and testing and execution of the startup in the field.

  • Coordinates startup between project engineering, construction, project operations personnel, and vendors.

  • Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of assigned Startup staff.

  • Prepares or directs the preparation of operations manuals.

  • Ensures that work being performed is within scope of services and within budget.

  • Provides input to project management, engineering, and construction to ensure startup requirements are incorporated into project activities, including review of project designs and construction to ensure operability and operating personnel safety.

  • Ensure quality work by defining project startup objectives and ensure that proper startup work plans, guidelines, and procedures are established.

  • Responsible to ensure all startup personnel and subcontractors adhere to all jobsite safety rules.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with Building Automation and Data Acquisition Systems (BAS).

  • Familiarity with LEED principles and guidelines.

  • Familiarity with HPSB principles and guidelines.

Education

Position requires Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering or Scientific discipline from an accredited institution and 12 years directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience specializing in an engineering discipline/engineering design including knowledge of building codes, engineering standards, and construction technologies

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
