Los Alamos National Laboratory Software Scientist 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

At LANL, we solve national security challenges through scientific, technological, and engineering excellence. The Weapons Research Services, Secure Networks and Applications (WRS-SNA) group is looking for Developers for our Scientific Software Engineering (SSE) team. The successful candidate will work as part of a team to support development projects with software development tools and processes within the Weapons Physics Directorate (ADX) and Weapons Engineering and Experiments Directorate (ADW). As a Scientist 2, you will be part of the SSE team responsible for:

  • Evaluating and implementing solutions and infrastructure to allow scientific software engineering teams to efficiently leverage modern professional software development practices.

  • Working with system administration to install software management tools in support of weapons programs.

  • Working with the WRS-SNA Network Security team to ensure established frameworks and solutions comply with required security controls.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

Technical Knowledge:

Extensive knowledge and experience in Linux. Extensive experience working with imperative and object-oriented programming languages such as C, C++, and FORTRAN 2003. Extensive experience working with interpreted programming languages such as Bash and Python. Extensive experience troubleshooting and working with software compilers and linked libraries.

Technical Development:

Extensive experience establishing and supporting solutions to support software development projects. Extensive experience supporting software development infrastructure for multiple development teams. Extensive experience establishing and managing code repositories for production development efforts. Extensive experience in web server administration and web application development.

Tools / Technologies:

Extensive experience working with development tools including Atlassian (Confluence, JIRA, Bitbucket, and associated plugins) and Gitlab, in secure configurations where user access across projects must be enforced. Extensive experience setting up and working with Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) tools. Extensive experience building complex custom workflows for JIRA projects.

Collaboration:

Proven ability to work independently and in a team environment to analyze problems, propose solutions to management, and deploy and document implemented solutions.

Education/Experience:

Position requires a bachelor’s degree in a related Science or Engineering field from an accredited university, and a minimum of five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Scientific Software Development:

Knowledge about scientific software development.

Computing Environments:

Knowledge about working in classified and unclassified computing environments.

Clearance:

Active DOE “Q” Clearance, and a DOE “SCI” Clearance.
