Los Alamos National Laboratory Software Developer 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Software Developer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Software and Applications Engineering (SAE) Division supports Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) enterprise applications and performs software application development support, database development and administration, software quality management, and enterprise application consulting. The Enterprise Business Software Group (SAE-2) provides application development, commercial off-the-shelf application implementation, and adoption/integration with Software as a Service solutions.

Software Developer 2 ($77,300-$126,000)

Working alongside some of the brightest minds, you will work with a team using agile development methodologies to support custom development and maintenance ofHRMS, Procurement, Financial, Inventory and Environment, Safety, Health applications systems, and infrastructure components . Specific duties include tasks associated with the upkeep of various laboratory applications, the design and development of new applications and standards, and ensuring compliance with Laboratory specifications, standards, and security policies. The candidate must have programming experience, excellent organization skills, and the ability to multi-task. Finally, we are looking for the candidate with a high motivation to learn new technologies, business processes, to become an expert in their field, and the willingness and confidence to develop safety-class, mission-critical software.

Software Developer 3 ($94,100 - $155,700)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will provide mentoring to junior staff members. We are looking for someone who likes to self-initiate work with limited supervision, use independent judgment for determining the course of action to accomplish objectives, and use a broad range of advanced technical skills to solve complex technical issues. At this level, on-call responsibilities to provide support for production applications are expected.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Software Lifecycle

Proven software lifecycle knowledge and experience in all phases, including requirements, design, development, and testing with appropriate documentation. Experience in writing and implementing business solutions using agile practices and principles.

Software

Demonstrate experience with working and utilizing Oracle Databases. Demonstrate proficiency level of reading and writing SQL/PLSQL queries. Experience with software configuration management and software quality assurance methodologies and practices. Experience utilizing a distributed version control system. Experience with consuming RESTful and SOAP Web Services. Intermediate to a professional level of experience with at least one programming language. Experience with React, JavaScript, JQuery, HTML5, CSS, J-SON, AJAX.

Customer Support

Experience providing customer support including collecting functional requirements, configuring, administering, and debugging technical issues with various IT systems. Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with peers and all levels of external and internal personnel, technical and non-technical.

Communication

Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills to handle communication with technical and non-technical peers, customers, and stakeholders. Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Clearance

Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain DOE clearances, which normally requires US citizenship.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Job Requirements for Software Developer 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Software

Demonstrate knowledge of secure coding practices. Experience analyzing and defining business requirements and preparing technical designs. Experience with consuming and authoring Web Services.Demonstrated experience designing and developing business solutions and/or integration solutions from the ground up. E xperience to analyze and define business requirements, research, design/develop and propose business solutions with technical designs. Demonstrate experience supporting, extending, enhancing, and upgrading Commercial of the Shelf Products (COTS). Experience using secure coding practices. Experience with consuming and authoring REST and/or SOAP Web Services. Experience with SAP Ariba and Fieldglass Integrations/Interfaces.

Problem Solving

Experience developing system integration and system implementation plans. Ability to solve unique integration problems by using analytic ability and innovative thinking to meet budget, timetables, and objectives. Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to problems. Ability to work for long term goals in a large organizational setting.

Communication

Ability to work independently with a minimal direction and/or serve as a Technical Lead on projects and coordinate technical activities of project personnel. Excellent wring and verbal communication skills with the ability to negotiate and use proper judgment in order to resolve conflicts, solve problems, increase efficiency, and improve services and products with minimal management help. Demonstrate experience and wiliness to provide technical mentorship to junior staff members.

Education/Experience at higher level :Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with SAP Ariba and Fieldglass Integrations/Interfaces.

  • Experience with Oracle Project Accounting, General Ledger, Fixed Assets, Payables, Advanced Receivables, Cash Management, Inventory, Purchasing.

  • Experience with Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle databases (version 12c or higher), and APEX.

  • Experience utilizing tools such as Jira and/or Confluence.

  • Experience utilizing Scrum or Kanban framework.

  • Experience developing and enhancing Mobile Applications.

  • Experience supporting and extending Cloud applications.

  • Knowledge of the DevSecOps culture and principles and experience CI/CD development, and deployment of software in a diverse application environment.

  • Experience with using cloud web services such as AWS provider, Google Cloud.

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.
