Los Alamos National Laboratory SCIF Security Specialist 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Special Access Programs/Intelligence Special Access Programs (SAP/ISAP) Operations Group (SSO-1), within the Special and Sensitive Operations (SSO) Division is seeking a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIF) Security Specialist 3 to provide advanced level security support for the Special Access Programs (SAPs). This group works in partnership with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Defense (DOD), and the Intelligence Community for Los Alamos National Laboratory. Using your broad and in-depth knowledge of applicable DOE-IN, NNSA, and/or LANL safeguards and security policies and procedures you will assess operations, interpret policies, and implement operational and programmatic improvements to ensure compliance.
This position requires in‐depth technical understanding of security requirements, organizational objectives/missions, and the ability to effectively negotiate and navigate challenges in order to achieve the security and programmatic needs of our operations. On-the-job (OJT) and external training will be required to ensure candidate is properly certified to perform assigned functions in a challenging and rewarding environment.
As a SCIF Security Specialist 3, you will:
Coordinate and set direction for LANL (SCIF) and Special Access Program Facilities (SAPF) projects.
Coordinate SCIF/SAPF accreditation requirements with federal oversight personnel.
Work with LANL Safeguards and Security organizations in providing support to LANL SCIF/SAPF operational support.
Coordinate facility work with the Facility Operations Director (FOD) and SSO security staff.
Provides guidance and interpretation of relevant security policies.
Demonstrated experience conducting research, investigation alternatives, and recommending solutions for problems affecting security and safeguards.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Security Technical knowledge:
Professional/specialized knowledge and experience in one or more of the major security areas: physical security, SAP operations or other high-security activities.
Advanced knowledge and experience with security functions such as identification of vulnerabilities and assessment of risks.
Demonstrated knowledge and expertise with security functions requiring extensive documentation and data management.
Experience conducting research, investigating alternatives, and recommending solutions on problems affecting security and safeguards.
Auditing and Assessment:
Independently plan, direct, and conduct self-assessments.
Proven in-depth knowledge of DOE Orders and LANL requirements as related to Safeguards and Security Programs and experience in DOE assessments and internal tracking of assessment findings.
Safeguards and Security Procedural Knowledge:
- Advanced technical knowledge of DOE Orders for Safeguards and Security.
Communications and Customer Service:
Promote and cultivate an atmosphere of excellent customer‐service that is responsive to internal and external customer’s needs and achieve a high level of customer satisfaction.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to obtain a DOE Q and TS/SCI Clearance.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of related education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Knowledgeable with Intelligence Community Directives.
Knowledgeable with DOE Order 471.5, Special Access Programs.
Knowledgeable with Department of Defense Special Access Program (SAP) Security Manual.
General knowledgeable of National Industrial Security Program Operations Manual (NISPOM).
Experience providing mentorship and guidance to a security staff team
Effective interactions and collaborations with Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA), Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence (DOE/IN), and institutional security personnel.
Extensive skills in the preparation and presentation of security and safeguards reports to internal and external customers at all levels
Active DOE Q and TS/SCI Clearance.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
