Los Alamos National Laboratory RF Engineering Group Leader / (R&D Manager 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Accelerator Operations and TechnologyRadio Frequency Engineering (AOT-RFE) Group provides expertise, support, and technical leadership in high-power RF systems, high-voltage systems, pulsed-power systems, low-level RF feedback and feedforward systems, and magnet power supply systems. AOT-RFE’s primary focus is the design, development, operations and maintenance of these systems for the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) User Facility, an 800-MeV, megawatt-class proton accelerator.

The AOT-RFE Group Leader is responsible for defining the vision and strategic plan for the AOT-RFE group. This position will oversee a broad range of basic and applied accelerator science and technology programs for national security and non-defense applications, including participation in the research and development of projects both internal and external to the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

The successful candidate will be responsible for an annual budget of $15.5M and will provide technical leadership and management of the group's staff.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience and skills in setting priorities and assigning tasks, performance evaluation, mentoring of employees, coaching, team building, and conflict resolution.

  • Extensive operations and maintenance experience at an accelerator or similar large scientific facility.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with electrical safety and managing a diverse complement of electrical work activities.

  • A strong record of technical accomplishments and experience in one or more of the group's technical focus areas; high-power RF systems, feedback and feedforward RF controls, pulsed-power systems, and magnet power supply systems.

  • Demonstrated successful application of sound business practices and judgment, including strategic and tactical planning skills, strong fiscal management skills, and exceptional oral and written communication skills.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree (in science or engineering?) from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A successful background in program development and marketing, preparation of technical and budgetary proposals, and presentation of new ideas and proposals to existing and potential customers.

  • Demonstrated success in fostering new programs both unilaterally and through teaming with other managers and other organizations.

  • Master’s level degree equivalent or above

The Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) Division provides leadership in accelerator science, engineering, and operations in support of National User Facilities and in solving national security challenges. A principal element of the division's portfolio is operation, maintenance, and improvement of the injector, beam transport, linear accelerators, proton storage ring, and targets of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), a multipurpose National User Facility that provides intense neutron and proton pulsed beams to support multidisciplinary fundamental and applied research and medical radioisotope production.
