This role works in a team environment within LANL’s nuclear facility to manufacture product, support material movement and support glove box operations. The majority of daily work is “hands-on” glove box work in support of plutonium processing. Processes at Los Alamos National Lab are performed using detailed operating procedures and work requires extensive knowledge and expertise following Conduct of Operations, nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological safety and environmental compliance requirements.

The selected candidate will work in a group within the Actinide Material Processing & Power (AMPP) Division in support of Pu-238 science and manufacturing for NASA and their exploration programs and various Defense Programs.

Research Technologist 3 ($94,100- $155,700)

Duties may include, but are not necessarily limited to: planning operational support and staff activities; coordinating operational and programmatic activities; serving as a key advisor to the management team on operational, and/or programmatic especially pertaining to material control and accountability requirements, inventory management, process material feed, and facility storage and packaging requirements; facilitating the group objectives and the tactical planning to achieve objectives; and researching, developing, and implementing systems, processes, policies, and procedures to ensure operational, and/or programmatic consistency, efficiency, and compliance.

Education / Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires a High School Diploma.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience and working knowledge in SNM material handling/movement.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of industry, regulatory, DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration criteria and standards.

  • Knowledge of actinide science and engineering principles. Experience performing work in manufacturing environment.

  • Experience with any of the following: actinide aqueous separations chemistry; running and maintaining high temperature resistance furnaces for actinide materials stabilization; milling and blending operations for actinide materials: performing repack consolidation and discard operations of actinide residues: performing work in regular/inert atmosphere gloveboxes; and work with radioactive materials.

  • Knowledge of shipping and receiving and waste management requirements.

  • Experience working with SAFE-NMCA regarding investigations of abnormal or out of control conditions.

  • Datasheet and database manipulation experience.

  • Knowledge of control charts.

  • In-depth knowledge of the Pu-238 mission and the associated processes.

  • Ability to obtain a Q Clearance and HRP

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
