Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Technologist 1 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Applied Genomics Sequencing Team in the Bioscience Division at Los Alamos National Lab is seeking a Research Technologist 1 to join their team. This unique opportunity provides a wide variety of day-to-day responsibilities in research environment where creativity is encouraged. As a member of the sequencing team, you will primarily be performing quality control of extracted nucleic acids from a variety of types of clinical and environmental samples, preparing libraries for DNA sequencing and running different sequencing platforms (Illumina, Oxford Nanopore and Pacific Biosciences). In the lab, additional tasks will include conducting R&D experiments to streamline and improve library preparation of various samples and prep methods as well as maintaining the sequencing lab by cleaning, stocking and organizing.

Outside of the lab, you will be responsible for carefully documenting sample information in the information management system and helping to inventory sample and prepared libraries. You will also assist with planning workshops, classes and preparing shipments and working directly with a wide breadth of foreign collaborators. Opportunities to travel to Africa, Europe and Middle East and Asia to teach and work with our partner labs are available. Other projects and tasks will vary depending on your skills and our current needs.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: molecular biology, DNA sequencing technologies, cell culture, or genetics.

  • Proven ability to contribute to the fulfillment of research goals and to solve basic technical problems of requiring review of online and paper resources.

  • Knowledge of biology and laboratory practices certification and/or formal education.

  • Strong communication skills in planning, logistics, and support of research teams.

  • Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week.

  • Ability to effectively work in a team environment

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Foreign travel may be required

Education/Experience : Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or other STEM field from an accredited college or university and 2 years of relevant experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience extracting nucleic acids from clinical and environmental samples and preparing DNA libraries.

  • Experience with Next Generation Sequencing, specifically with the Illumina platform.

  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

  • Experience with teaching or preparing training materials, including written materials, power point slides, videos, editing videos, packaging materials and shipping.

  • Experience working in a BSL2 environment.

  • Experience with command line or other UNIX based environments is a plus.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Where You Will Work

The Biosciences Genomics Team capabilities include both a core sequencing facility specializing in Illumina, PacBio and Oxford Nanopore technologies, and a bioinformatic data analysis group adapting state-of-the-art methods and devising novel strategies and algorithms to better interpret genomic, metagenomic, transcriptomic, and epigenetic sequencing data. Our group comprises experimental and computational bioscientists working on projects that span a range of topics, including algal biology/bioenergy, microbial ecology, bacterial/viral/genome evolution, host-microbe interactions (e.g. host-pathogen, fungal-bacterial symbioses, etc.), cancer biology, biosurveillance, and pathogen diagnostics.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
