Job Information

Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Technologist (Engineering Technologist 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Work in the Space Instrument Realization (ISR-5) group of the Intelligence and Space Research Division (ISR) as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist. The Space Instrument Realization Group (ISR-5) provides engineering and technical expertise to develop and deploy high-quality, innovative measurement systems to space for national security applications and NASA missions. ISR-5 is composed of electrical and mechanical engineers, systems engineers, technicians, and project control specialists, all of whom engage on high performance project teams that span conceptual development to deployment.

The development, production, and delivery of national security payloads as well as one-of-a-kind NASA instruments requires a high degree of expertise and creativity. The successful candidate will serve as a technologist engaged in an instrument subsystem and system design, fabrication, assembly and testing including implementation of fixtures and data acquisition systems, data interpretation activities, and formal reporting. Fabrication and testing activities require participation as a critical member of a highly functioning team environment with technicians, engineers, scientists, and project controls staff within Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) as well as with Sandia National Laboratory (SNL) and other organizations. Test operations include set up of testing environments, executing test objectives, and facilitating assessment of instrumentation performance relative to requirements. Specific test environments include, but are not limited to, shock, vibration, load/deflection testing, vacuum and temperature environments.

Engineering Technologist 1 ($75,400 - $122,900)

  • Maintain required safety and security training, assure safety and security compliance, and make safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

  • Use and apply standard principles, theories, concepts, techniques and innovative approaches to perform work.

  • Assist in engineering studies to formulate, determine and evaluate design criteria for structures, systems and equipment. Assist with technical research and gather data needed for engineering analysis.

  • Apply knowledge of analytical and/or scientific software, computer-aided design (CAD) and/or CAD/CAM software and/or industrial control software within a relevant discipline.

  • Assist in product/system/equipment design, development and/or production processes. Prepare, review and document technical information, including test reports, anomaly reporting, and technical procedures.

  • Perform independent diagnosis of anomalies, failures or malfunctions, replace defective components (including possible hand soldering), and perform basic troubleshooting using detailed drawings, manuals, and written instructions.

  • Promote a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Engineering Technologist 2 ($83,300 - $136,200)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the candidate will:

  • Perform structural and/or thermal analysis and modeling to meet performance requirements and validate new designs.

  • Create and maintain CAD models and drawings. Perform drawing checks and engineering reviews for colleagues.

  • Identify long term needs of the project. Create solutions to address these needs and implement them in order to improve quality, safety, and streamline operations.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Software Knowledge:

  • Knowledge in the use of some typical engineering design software such as SolidWorks, Creo, or other similar software for mechanical design.

  • Knowledge in the use of some typical engineering software for data acquisition, analysis, and display such as Mathcad, MATLAB, EXCEL, LabView, Origin, or other similar software.

Design:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical design fundamentals including manufacturing processes, material selection, and basic structural and thermal analysis.

  • Ability to take mechanical product or fixture design from initial concept through production and assembly.

Collaboration:

  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish technical tasks while working independently as well as in a team environment with engineers and scientists.

Testing & Troubleshooting:

  • Demonstrated experience in the testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems and tooling.

Planning & Development:
