Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Manager 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

As the Deputy Group Leader (DGL) of the Non-Destructive Testing & Evaluation (E-6) Group, the selected candidate will team with the E-6 Group Leader, the E-6 first line managers, E-6 staff and the E Division leadership team to provide engineering leadership and technical management for the group. The DGL will report to the Group Leader and serve on the E Division management team. The Deputy Group Leader will assist and supplement the Group Leader in ensuring effective program execution, sound fiscal stewardship, adherence to safety and security policies, program development, personnel development and other business administrative issues. E-6 provides application, development, and research for state-of-the-art methods of inspection and non-destructive testing in support of all aspects of the Laboratory mission, including weapons components, accident forensics, materials characterization, and advanced energy systems. The group consists of R&D engineers, scientists, technicians, and professionals that implement capabilities of radiographic, ultrasonic, dye penetrant, eddy current and other inspection modalities.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Leadership

  • Demonstrated success in leadership and/or management of a program, line organization or large engineering project.

  • Experience in recruiting, evaluating, mentoring and retaining talented undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs (including promoting diversity and fostering teamwork).

  • Demonstrated successful application of sound business practices and promoting objectives in such areas as performance improvement and budget management.

Technical

Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of the group’s mission areas (for example: Radiographic Testing, Ultrasonic Testing, Eddy Current Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Penetrant Testing). Effective interpersonal and communication skills, which include the ability to engage in technical conversations with all levels of staff, the ability to discuss program strategies with current and potential funding agencies, an ability to delegate tasks to staff and administrators and an ability to interact with all levels of Laboratory management.

Nuclear Weapon Program Initiatives

Demonstrated experience in building collaborative partnerships across LANL internal organizations and demonstrated success in developing and sustaining engineering programs that attract support from the Nuclear Weapons Programs, Global Security Programs, NNSA, DOE, LDRD, DoD, or private industry.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Safety & Security

Familiarity with LANL administrative, safety and security policies. Active DOE Q Clearance.

Technical

Advanced knowledge in at least one of E-6’s NDT inspection methods (for example: Radiographic Testing, Ultrasonic Testing, Eddy Current Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Penetrant Testing). Demonstrated knowledge of LANL weapons systems, subsystems and components. Advanced knowledge of one or more of the group’s customer mission areas (nuclear weapons’ parts production, surveillance), demonstrated experience in working and survising work in a moderate or high hazard facility. . Experience in process hazard analysis, development of integrated work documents and safety basis operations.

Nuclear Weapon Program Initiatives

Familiarity with work/project execution in a nuclear facility environment. Experience in interactions between national laboratories, universities or private industry.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
