What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Detonator Production Engineering group supports inert component and detonator production operations in the Detonator Production (DP) Division, part of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP). Manufacturing Engineers focus on the final state of production, improving yield and process control while ensuring accurate documentation recorded for a clean sale. They are process-centric and also collaborate with other Manufacturing Engineers to ensure the product as a whole fits together. They are on the floor supporting manufacturing technicians and ensuring processes run efficiently.
Manufacturing engineers use the principles and theories of engineering, math and science and a disciplined approach to solve technical problems in support of engineering and engineering research. Supports engineering/projects in the performance of complex and demanding assignments requiring initiative and independent judgment. May provide direction to technicians. Able to work independently and as part of a team. Utilizes engineering and computer technology to accomplish work. Continuously improves work processes to meet customer needs.

R&D Engineer 2 ($94,100 - $155,700)
As a Manufacturing Engineer 2, you will initiate and conduct engineering assignments that ensure consistent quality and high yield of product manufactured in the areas of inert component and detonator production operations for the Detonator Engineer Group (DP-ENG).
Primary work scope includes, but is not limited to:
Ensuring safety and security compliance, maintaining required training, adhering to laboratory policies, programs, procedures and practices.
Responsibility for the fabrication, inspection, and testing of War Reserve and experimental detonator components and subcomponents.
Collaboration with Process Engineers, other Manufacturing Engineers, Quality Engineers, and Production Technicians to develop solutions to complex problems, design and implement new technologies, improve production cycle times, and maximize production yield rates.
Coordinating equipment maintenance and repair services to ensure production equipment is operating within required guidelines and specifications.
Conducting post-disassembly inspections and analyses on nuclear weapon stockpile assets.
Completely and continually document manufacturing processes through thorough design evaluations as well as feedback from the manufacturing group
R&D Engineer 3 ($113,100 - $190,000)
In addition to the above, a Detonator Production Manufacturing Engineer level 3 will develop, configure, optimize, and document, from inception through to startup and certification for future Mark Quality Manufacturing Center missions. The selected candidate shall have demonstrated experience in the application of lean manufacturing principles, the utilization of enterprise resource planning software, and advanced experience utilizing statistical process control to seek out opportunities for process improvements.
What You Need
R&D Engineer 2:
Technical - Proven experience applying engineering principles, methods, and tools to complex problems. Can effectively apply technology, fixtures, and automation to produce the required result in the most efficient and repeatable way possible. Knowledge and application of Lean Manufacturing Principles.
Leadership - Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership in the day-to-day process of system startup & operation, tooling setup, in-process performance monitoring, component inspection, and engineering decision-making.
Analytical – Use data to identify areas of poor quality or efficiency and collaborate with all stakeholders to develop and implement improvements to make the manufacturing processes more robust.
Communication – Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with all levels of the department. Can effectively explain equipment usage and training processes to manufacturing technicians both verbally and through formal written documentation.
Quality - Demonstrated experience in monitoring process performance using Statistical Process Control, Six Sigma, and other methods.
Interpretation of Drawings - Proficiency in interpreting and translating complex design agency specifications and engineering drawings.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:
Training – Maintain and ensure, in partnership with our Training department, the training for all technicians on manufacturing engineering positions.
Compliance – Lead and ensure design for manufacturability and regulatory compliance
Relationships – experience leading and working effectively across organizational lines.
Project Management – Experience applying project management principles to develop project plans that are effectively executed meeting scope, schedule and budget.
Education/Experience, level 2 : Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience, level 3 : Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications :
Weapons - Knowledge of the United States nuclear weapons programs, designs, and engineering.
Specific Skills - Understanding of photo-imaging methods techniques and circuit lamination methods. Ability to understand and modify Gerber files and G-Code. Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5, Dimensioning and Tolerances. Working proficiency with direct or parametric engineering modeling software (e.g., CREO, SolidWorks, ANSYS, and AutoCAD).
Clearance – Active, ability to reinstate, or ability to obtain a Department of Energy “Q” clearance.
