Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Engineer 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Process Controls team supports the Engineering Technology and Design Division (E), within the Process Automation and Control Group (E-3) which is responsible for the design, development, and field support of data acquisition systems, process control systems, machine control systems, and safety systems used for Pu Sustainment Programs as well as a variety of additional programs throughout the Laboratory. Principal responsibilities will be to provide electrical design engineering and support of control system hardware components and software controls for newly developed data acquisition and control systems. Systems range from standalone commercial controller-based equipment to large distributed computer-based systems. Some work will be conducted in a radiological area.

R&D Engineer 2 ($89,900 - $148,300)

The successful candidate will:

  • Design instrumentation and control systems for programmatic and production process lines.

  • Perform electrical analysis and calculations for signals and power for R&D equipment rack designs.

  • Utilize commercial software tools to program automated operation of process equipment.

  • Interpret and understand design drawing packages.

  • Provide fabrication and troubleshooting guidance to technicians.

  • Produce materials for technical reports, documents, presentations, and concept papers.

R&D Engineer 3 ($98,900 - $165,100)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Engineer 3 will be required to:

  • Provide technical guidance in control system design techniques to junior engineers and technicians.

  • Lead the design efforts of small multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Provide schedule development, cost estimates, and project status to program offices.

  • Contribute to the development of new control system and electrical design techniques to be implemented on new projects.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


We are looking for an engineer with experience in the areas of design and implementation of signal conditioning electronics, analog and digital I/O, and software development. You will need hands-on knowledge of National Instruments LabVIEW, National Instruments hardware platforms including CompactRIO, CompactDAQ, and/or PXI. Experience with Ethernet industrial communications, RS485 and RS232 communications. Experience and knowledge of equipment rack design, power supplies, and electrical power distribution.


As a system designer, you will need excellent oral and written communication skills, a keen ability to communicate and coordinate technical specificiations and timelines. You will need to demonstrate your utilization of tact, diplomacy, discretion, and attention to detail. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, and a record of dealing effectively with potential difficult situations. Demonstrated willingness to accept flexibility in work assignments.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Engineering Design

To qualify at the R&D engineer 3 level, you will need to be able to demonstrate your experience in LabVIEW Object Oriented Development, including basic and advanced architectures, the use of queues, state machine design, event structures and event handling. We also need you to discuss your previous work with the design and development of Data Acquisition hardware such as National Instruments hardware, LabVIEW PXI chassis, various interface cards, oscilloscopes, and digital multi-meters. Share your experience with LabVIEW development to include custom drivers for various equipment, FPGA development and troubleshooting. Demonstrate your ability to define, design, develop, test, debug, and maintain LabVIEW code for machine control software.

Project Management

As a level 3, the position requires someone who can work with limited oversight, demonstrate appropriate initiative, and make decisions. This position is comprised of information that needs to be organized, analyzed, and tracked for weapon test success. You will need to have extensive experience developing a schedule, estimating cost, and using effective methods to track and convey information to a variety audiences. You should also have experience developing project plans and providing leadership to project teams and be able to show how you have brought projects to successful outcomes. You will need to have demonstrated knowledge in business operations across a large business environment, and the ability to recommend solutions on problems affecting design and production.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:


An outstanding candidate will have with experience with developing SCADA systems utilizing cRIO real-time controller, working knowledge of Software Quality Assurance standards, and experience applying agile software development practices. Have experience utilizing Delacor Queued Message Handler (DQMH). ISA84 Safety Instrumented Systems.

Electrical Design

An outstanding candidate will have experience with electrical design packages (AutoCAD). Please share your working knowledge of NFPA 70 National Electrical Code and NFPA 70E Electrical Safety in the Workplace.

Process Knowledge

An exceptional candidate will have advanced knowledge of industrial chemical processes such as electrorefining.

Clearance Level

DOE Q Clearance preferred.

Training/Certifications: Certified LabVIEW Developer or LabVIEW Architect preferred. Human Reliability Program (HRP) certification preferred
