What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2/R&D Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Detonator Science and Technology Group (Q-6) is the design authority for primary detonators on current Los Alamos nuclear weapon stockpile systems. Q-6 provides engineering and design support to the production plants during production of War Reserve detonators, and assesses and reports on surveillance data for each stockpile detonator.
Q-6 is offering an exciting opportunity to be a part of a growing detonator modeling & simulation project where numerical tools are being created to enhance Q-6 capabilities to meet their mission. The group is seeking an enthusiastic and driven individual who can bring skills in programming and hydrocode modeling. This person must be capable of working independently on complex technical problems while also actively and openly contributing to the development team.
The project goal is building sustainable simulation tools for detonator applications. The fireset and initiator will be simulated using magneto-hydrodynamic codes that will feed into explosive simulations involving highly-calibrated reactive-burn models. Part of the project also involves developing a custom workflow that enables the recording and reporting of these critical simulations while simulating appropriate experimental diagnostics.
The successful candidate will work with customers and collaborators to ensure programs are supported and deliverables are met. Strong documentation (writing) skills and ability to present technical information to a wide audience through formal and informal technical interactions are crucial in this role. The successful candidate will work daily in a classified setting, and must demonstrate a strong commitment towards national security.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Proficient in a computer programming language, ideally Python. The successful candidate needs to be capable of learning to maintain the custom workflow software.
Demonstrated ability in the use of a multi-physics code, preferably a hydrocode, to perform simulations of shock and/or detonation phenomena. The ability to apply multi-physics codes to solve engineering challenges as they arise.
Ability to contribute to one of more of the following related tasks: experimental design and analysis, model development efforts, data evaluation, and/or code validation.
Demonstrated successful experience working in an integrated team environment.

Strong knowledge of shock, detonation, and/or explosive-initiation physics
Knowledge of initiation systems particular to nuclear weapon applications
Ability to read and interpret mechanical engineering design drawings
Experience with magneto-hydrodynamic modeling
Experience in running and/or guiding experiments in conjunction with numerical simulation activities.
Knowledge and experience relative to uncertainty quantification
Demonstrated experience in secure work environment or working with sensitive or classified information.
Active Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship.
R&D Engineer 2 Education Required: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
R&D Engineer 3 Education Required: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
