What You Will Do
The W78 Systems Engineering Group (W-3) is responsible for technical and programmatic oversight of matters pertaining to the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) W78 Nuclear Weapon System. The selected candidate will serve as a system/qualification engineering lead on the W78 instrumented joint test assembly refresh (JTA6R) project within the W78 System Engineering Group.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
Serve as the LANL lead engineer for the JTA6R system and sub-system qualification tests.
Participate as a LANL representative on the JTA6R System Product Realization Team (PRT).
Provide general engineering support for the JTA6R program including interactions with NNSA and other JTA6R project design and production agencies.
Provide general system engineering support for W78 sustainment.
Provide engineering expertise and resolving technical and programmatic issues associated with the W78 as deemed appropriate by the W-3 Group Leader.
Interface with comparable colleagues at other laboratories and Production Agencies (PAs), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Defense (DoD), principally the United States Air Force (USAF) and their contractors.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following areas: engineering design, development, qualification, assembly/production, or testing. Demonstrated experience with highly complex, system-level integrated experiments preferably involving high explosives. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
Provide system-engineering support by helping resolve technical and programmatic issues as deemed appropriate by the W-3 Group Leader. Collaborate with other Groups and Divisions within LANL as well as with Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), and Air Force personnel to maintain Nuclear Certification of the W78 warhead.
D emonstrated excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of Laboratory personnel and internal and external customers.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 4 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Working knowledge of nuclear weapons and the U.S. stockpile.
A Master’s of Science degree in mechanical, aerospace or related engineering field is preferred.
Functional knowledge of the W78 weapon system, component design, development, qualification, assembly, production, surveillance, or high explosives.
Experience with flight testing including JTA design and production.
Demonstrated experience with the engineering authorization and document management systems (e.g. PDM Link).
Familiarity with weapon systems mechanical and electrical interfaces.
Demonstrated experience with assembly and/or disassembly practices applicable to the W78 or other weapon systems.
Knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices.
Knowledge of subsystem and system qualification testing practices.
Knowledge of engineering authorization systems, document management systems (e.g., PDM Link or like software) and applications to stockpile maintenance and configuration management.
Demonstrated experience interacting with one or more NSE Production Agency’s.
Derivative Classifier (DC) experience.
Active Q clearance, or the ability to obtain an Active Q Clearance.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
