Los Alamos National Laboratory Quantum Matter Technologist (Research Technology 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Research Technologist will work as part of LANL’s Strongly Correlated Electron Materials team. The team aims to discover and understand new physics through new materials. The team consists of 7 research staff members and 10 postdocs with expertise in sample growth, transport and thermodynamics, device fabrication, measurements under extreme conditions (high pressure and low temperature), nuclear magnetic resonance, photoemission, and neutron scattering. The successful candidate will support one or more of these efforts. As such, the successful candidate will design, build, and modify state-of-the-art vacuum, cryogenic, and/or furnace equipment and perform experiments on novel quantum materials. The successful candidate will become an integral member of this renowned and highly successful LANL team and will make critical contributions to exciting scientific research possibly including synthesizing materials, collecting and analyzing data, and writing scientific reports or journal articles.
The candidate may become involved in one (or more) of the following projects:
Design, build, and test new equipment to develop new crystal growth capabilities
Rebuild and test an existing vacuum chamber for angle-resolved photoemission measurements under ultra-high vacuum conditions
Maintain cryogenic measurement systems and develop novel experimental probes
Develop device fabrication capabilities utilizing focused ion beam milling
Research Technologist 1 ($77,300 - $126,000)
Design, build, and test new equipment to develop new experimental capabilities
Develop new analytical methods to achieve program objectives
Work with staff members to develop, implement, and complete project objectives
Support helium liquefaction operations, along with a technician
Work with vendors to maintain, troubleshoot and repair analytical instruments
Communicate results through internal reports, oral presentations, and/or technical publications
Research Technologist 2 ($85,400 - $139,600)
In addition to work outlined above, the Research Technologist 2 will:
- Be involved in more than one of the projects listed above
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience with use of analytical equipment, especially cryogenic equipment
Demonstrated experience in machining, soldering/brazing, and vacuum techniques
Demonstrated understanding of analytical instrument troubleshooting and repair
Demonstrated experience in working independently as well as within a team environment
Demonstrated experience in meeting scheduled deliverables or milestones
Fluency in common software packages including Excel, Word, PowerPoint
Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills
Additional Job Requirements for Research Technologist 2:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Experience working independently to develop, implement, and complete project objectives of moderately complex scope
Under consultative direction with staff members, experience performing experiments and analyzing data independently
Experience contributing ideas to new proposals and scientific directions
Experience mentoring other technicians
Experience managing safety and security tasks and duties for the team's activities
Education/Experience for Research Technologist 1: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, or engineering technology from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience for Research Technologist 2: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, or engineering technology from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Master’s degree preferred.
Fluent in design software packages such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD
Knowledge and experience of cryogenic, vacuum, furnace, and/or gas-handling systems
Knowledge and experience of trouble-shooting basic electric systems
