Los Alamos National Laboratory Quality Assurance Engineer 4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Quality Engineer will be part of the Institutional Quality and Performance Assurance-Quality Support Services (IQPA-QSS) group and will report to the IQPA-QSS Project Execution Team Lead and Group Leader. The IQPA-QSS mission is to support Institutional Programs and Projects to ensure quality requirements are adequately implemented into processes by performing oversight activities to validate specifications are being adhered to during construction, maintenance, and modification activities at LANL. You will be responsible for assisting effective implementation of the Laboratory’s quality assurance program relating to the construction in nuclear, radiological, and non-nuclear facilities. You may need to work a night or alternative work schedule.

Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Review and prepare procurement documentation germane to quality assurance and quality engineering requirements;

  • Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of processes, procedures, and applications contributing to the overall objective of sustaining an effective engineering, procurement, and construction Quality Management System;

  • Participate in nonconformance reporting and corrective action processes;

  • Lead, coordinate, and/or conduct audits and surveillance of quality-affecting engineering, procurement, construction, and ancillary project work.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expert level knowledge and application of applicable nuclear codes and standards. For example: 10 CFR 830 Subpart A, DOE Order 414.1D, national consensus standard ASME NQA-1—2008/ASME NQA-1a-2009 Addenda to ASME NQA-1 – 2008, and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Regulatory Guide Series or equivalent.

  • Expert level technical knowledge of the application of engineering, procurement, and construction practices sufficient to comprehend specified QA requirements for these disciplines; including Commercial Grade Dedication (CGD) and application of the graded approach in an NQA-1 environment.

  • Expert level experience participating in and supporting quality assessments, surveillances, audits and/or cause analysis.

  • Expert ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, specifications, and schematics.

  • Expert ability to effectively communicate with all levels of personnel across multiple organizations to solve complex problems.

  • Proven ability to plan, prioritize, and schedule work to ensure completion in accordance with requirements, deadlines, and budget.

Education/Experience : Bachelor’s degree in engineering, quality assurance, industrial systems engineering or related field and 12 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Post-graduate degree preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Currently or previously achieved lead auditor certification from a recognized professional organization and/or lead auditor qualification from a previous employer.

  • Expert level experience in the identification and resolution of performance problems associated with quality and continuous improvement.

  • Expert level experience and ability to ensure quality assurance requirements are met during the design, bid, build, and start-up of nuclear, non-nuclear, high-, moderate, and low-hazard facilities and process equipment; experience with glovebox and/or fume hoods is highly desired.

  • Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas and associated tools: performance improvement; commitment management; measures, assessments; lessons learned; risk characterization; trend analysis; process improvement; human performance improvement; and, causal analysis for abnormal events.

  • Experience as an M&O contractor for the Department of Energy (DOE).

This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.
