Los Alamos National Laboratory Project Engineering Technologist 2 (Engineer Technologist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Come and join an innovative team conducting groundbreaking research in defense of our nation. The new Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) Facility Operations (LFO) and Science & Technology Operations (STO) Design Group will provide design engineering support for LFO, STO, and other nuclear facility customers as required. As the LFO / STO Design Group Leader, you will lead this new multi-disciplinary engineering group in providing innovative facility engineering solutions for the Los Alamos National Laboratory's scientific and national security mission.
The Roles and responsibilities for this new position include:
Provide nuclear design-engineering services for portfolio projects in LFO, STO, and other nuclear facilities as required to ensure facilities are designed, constructed, modified and maintained to satisfy customer needs and expectations in a cost effective, safe, and compliant manner.
Ensure implementation of Conduct of Engineering in accordance with the Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1) Program.
Serves as the group manager directing a robust workforce and managing multifaceted activities within nuclear facility engineering. Work environment often includes high hazards within a nuclear facility.
Spends the majority of time working executing work for nuclear facilities (including DARHT and LANSCE).
Provide a range of engineering services, including project engineering, design engineering, and field engineering, in support of project execution.
Directs the strategic activities of engineers executing work in accordance with DOE nuclear facility requirements to integrate and support the mission and goals of the Laboratory’s facility and programmatic operations.
Communicate with all levels of internal and external customers to define and recommend cross-organizational operational objectives.
Responsible for developing short-term and long-range plans for portfolio projects, and monitor progress to assure long-term objectives are attained and customer requirements are met.
Ensure daily open communication with workers (including subcontractors) that promotes an environment where workers feel comfortable bringing errors, system weaknesses, and issues to management attention.
Perform design review of external design agency design submittals.
Lead initiatives to improve the organization.
Provide technical and administrative oversight to ensure compliance with facility requirements, CoE, and Configuration Management (CM) program requirements.
Provide leadership in resolution of technical and personnel issues.
Developing staffing plans in accordance with customer requirements and within budget constraints, perform recruiting and hiring activities to implement those plans, and develop staff through training, mentoring and qualification programs.

Knowledge and Experience
This position will serve in a management role and provide knowledge and experience in engineering and administration for facility projects and on-going operations and maintenance within nuclear facilities is required. Specific knowledge and experience sought for includes:
Advanced knowledge in the development and support of a large, complex, technical organization involving nuclear facility engineering, nuclear criticality safety or safety basis management.
Demonstrated ability to manage a large team of different disciplined engineers and other staff members. Proven experience implementing formal processes to meet engineering requirements.
Strong interpersonal skills in both verbal and written communications. Able to effectively communicate with all levels of management and staff.
Demonstrated team building capability.
Demonstrated capability in successfully developing internal and external customer relationships achieving a high degree of customer satisfaction. Expertise in negotiation with customers and support organizations and resolving conflicts.
Experience in developing and managing budgets.
Demonstrated experience related to the development and implementation of in-house engineering standards, master specifications, and Conduct of Engineering for facility operations and maintenance.
Management experience effecting the requirements above.
Education/Experience : Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2 Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the position can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
Knowledge of LANL activities and nuclear operations including project execution and management, legal, procurement, construction, environmental safety and health (ES&H), and quality assurance.
Knowledge/experience of LANL Engineering Standards Manual; LANL Conduct of Engineering procedures; and DOE Orders and Standards related to nuclear facility design, construction, and project management.
Professional license (PE) in an engineering discipline from a recognized licensing board preferred.
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.
