Los Alamos National Laboratory Project Engineering Technologist 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an enthusiastic junior-level Project Engineering Technologists with an interest in building systems and infrastructure to work in the Engineering Services – Engineering Project Delivery (ES-EPD) group. This posting is for multiple Project Engineering Technologist positions to serve under the Project Engineering Team. Projects include new facility construction; existing facility upgrades or modifications; expense funded construction activities; and/or decommissioning/demolition.

Engineering Technologist 1 ($77,300 - $126,000)

As a Project Engineer, you will act as the lead technical representative for engineering activities related to the planning, design, execution, and closeout of projects. You will be expected to lead and manage development of projects with an integrated project team (IPT) that includes both customers, stakeholders, subject matter experts and others.

  • Aids in scope and requirements development of projects with an integrated project team (IPT) that includes both customers, stakeholders, subject matter experts and others.

  • Assists engineering design efforts for both internal and external engineering design teams; manage design reviews, and assure changes are implemented by facilitating the resolution of comments, and ensure delivery of the design product.

  • Manage technical requirements and issues during construction, including coordinating designer-constructor interface, design changes, submittal reviews, inspection documentation, request for information (RFI), commissioning, and certificate of occupancy process.

  • Work with an integrated project team to assure substantial completion, punch-list, as built and turnover process is correctly implemented for project closeout.

  • Work with others to resolve a wide range of design and constructability issues in creative ways that adhere to codes and standards; and provide resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems.

Engineering Technologist 2 ($85,400 - $139,600)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will:

  • Independently lead all activities listed under the Engineering Technologist 1 position.

  • Lead initiatives that benefit the engineering organization.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Effectively communicate and develop engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.

  • Plan, forecast, and identify necessary engineering resources to support project workload requirements; reviewing project engineering progress against approved schedules and budgets; evaluating changes; and taking corrective action when required.

  • Knowledge of engineering design processes and procedures, including industry codes, standards and the ability to perform work in accordance with the LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE).

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Understanding of engineering work planning, scheduling, and cost estimating.

  • Proven ability to conduct independent work requiring judgment in the application of engineering techniques.

  • Working knowledge of infrastructure or utility design, codes and standards.

  • Fully capable of performing as a subcontract administrator for design subcontracts including preparing statements of work, and approving invoices.

  • Experienced with projects in construction, change management, and engagement with field personnel.

  • Understanding of Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS), performance reporting, and variance analysis.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to evaluate, modify or produce designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes.

  • Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals and procedures.

Note to Applicants:

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
