Los Alamos National Laboratory Project Controls 4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Project Controls 4 position provides leadership and oversight for a Project Controls team responsible for implementing LANL project controls system, processes, procedures and tools on a project or program which are executed by the responsible directorates. This position supervises and leads schedule development, maintenance and monitoring activities. Supervises cost estimating, analysis, and cost control activities. Prepares and reviews or supervises the preparation and presentation of cost engineering and planning activities. Supports project or program organizational and administrative activities. Ensures work is completed as scheduled and as budgeted. Identifies cost trends for management attention.

This position requires strong leadership capability teamed with an in-depth knowledge of project controls, high degree of technical skilled experience, and proven ability to develop and implement policies that support project controls objectives.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Extensive management experience leading large organizations/projects/programs with significant fiscal and programmatic responsibilities.

  • Extensive experience in the Project Controls function and sub functions of cost, schedule.

  • Extensive and proven expertise in performing, monitoring, and reviewing planning and scheduling functions, including schedule development, schedule control, and schedule analysis.

  • Extensive experience in cost engineering functions, including cost estimating, cost control, financial reporting systems, and cost and variance analysis.

  • Advanced experience in preparing project controls reports, plans, and detailed staffing utilization plans.

  • Advanced knowledge of financial reporting systems and project code of accounts, and understanding of accounting instructions, which impact project controls.

  • Possess advanced knowledge and extensive experience using scheduling software tools such as Primavera P6.

  • Advanced experience and knowledge of using cost processors such as Cobra.

  • Possess advanced knowledge and technical skills with integration of all project controls system components.

  • Experience serving as a subject matter expert and mentoring others on diverse topics of the scheduling and cost processor software applications.

  • Extensive experience with successful implementation and maintenance of an Earned Value Management System (EVMS).

  • Distinguished track record setting technical direction and goals, developing programs, implementing effective business practices and systems, managing personnel, managing budgets and finances, training of technical and non-technical personnel, and managing customer and stakeholder relations.

  • Advanced knowledge of using personal computer operating systems and general computer applications and software, including several basic software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Demonstrated experience in effective decision-making and creative problem solving.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and grow effective internal and external organizational relationships.

  • Excellent communication skills, including interpersonal, verbal and written, demonstrating the ability to interact effectively with all levels of management, staff and customers.

  • Experience leading large organizations, programs, or projects with significant fiscal and programmatic responsibilities.

  • Knowledge of engineering and/or construction management customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience.

  • Knowledge of Laboratory processes and procedures customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience.

Education Required: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree in Project Management or a related discipline from an accredited institution and a minimum of ten years of Project Controls experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.

Where You Will Work

Located in beautiful northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security.

The Project Controls group reports to the Program Performance Services organization within the Capital Projects Associate Level Directorate of Los Alamos National Laboratory. The Project Controls Group (PPS-PC) has over 200 employees deployed across the Laboratory performing project controls functions for both capital projects and science programs.

The Project Controls group provides subject matter expertise which support standard Project Management operations along with application of the LANS-certified Earned Value Management System (EVMS) where appropriate for ensuring that control systems are maintained in compliance with that certification. Capital Projects focus is on delivering quality projects and programs, safely and in compliance within scope, schedule and budget for the lab.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
