What You Will Do
The Space Data Science & Systems Group (ISR-3) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a qualified Post-Bachelors embedded software engineer to participate in the execution of our portfolio of space and ground-based programs. ISR-3 is an integral part of the Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division, and has its core capabilities in software development, mission operations, data exploitation, machine learning, data systems development, and integration.
The Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory has been designing, building, and operating highly innovative ground, air and space-based measurement and detection systems for nearly 60 years. We solve some of the most challenging scientific and national security problems facing the world today. Our interdisciplinary teams of engineers, technicians, and scientists work, learn, and succeed through a highly creative and dynamic R&D environment. We lead experiments on NASA missions, including the Curiosity Rover, Van Allen Probes, and IBEX as well as the upcoming Mars 2020 Rover, IMAP Mission, NACHOS hyperspectral CubeSat, and BEAMPIE rocket experiment. We also build, fly, operate and analyze data from measurement systems deployed to space for verification of international nuclear treaties, and develop innovative sensors, ground, airborne, and space hardware/software systems for basic scientific missions, nuclear nonproliferation, space situational awareness and remote sensing.
The candidate will have a strong engineering background in the areas of software engineering, basic knowledge of electrical engineering, and an enthusiasm for creative problem solving and learning. They should also have technical initiative and experience in contributing to a project from an innovative concept to its use or application. More specifically, the candidate will participate in one or more of the following activities:
Develop real-time embedded software following a rigorous software development process
Develop flight software for use on radiation-hardened processors to control, process, acquire, and distribute data from scientific satellite payloads
Develop embedded software for ground-based processors that simulate a satellite spacecraft/payload interface used during the development, testing, and integration of the satellite payload onto the spacecraft
Write device drivers to interface with custom in-house designed hardware
Contribute to continuous software process improvement
Extract and define software requirements from system level requirements
Define overall embedded software architecture and interfaces between different software components
Develop Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and other system level requirements
Interface with end users, scientists, engineers, and fellow colleagues to understand payload requirements, deliverables and time-frames, coordinate resources, plan, track, and execute project plans
Present results of work at programmatic meetings
Enhance technical and professional expertise through training
The successful candidate will become a member of ISR-3 and be assigned to the Embedded and Flight Software Engineering team.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated basic knowledge and experience in one or more of the following electrical engineering or computer science focus areas:
Embedded Systems Application Programming
Real-Time Operating Systems
Digital Logic Design
Operating System Design
Computer Processor Architectures and Design
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a team environment
Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in written and oral communications
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale.

Experience in formal software development processes
Experience with the development, deployment and operation of sensors
Experience with laboratory and/or field use of instruments
Experience with satellite sensors and programs
Experience in large data‐set management and exploitation
VHDL or Verilog experience
Test benches for FPGA or ASIC based design
Python/GO programming experience
Experience estimating task completion effort
Experience with formal test plan development and test execution including unit testing and functional testing
Experience with remote sensing, digital image/signal processing techniques, and basic geography concepts such as map projections
Active "Q" Clearance
Education : Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or another related field obtained at the time of hire or within the past 3 years, but have not yet been accepted and enrolled in a graduate program.
