Los Alamos National Laboratory Numerical Methods, Differential Equations, and Uncertainty Quantification Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The T-5 Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics Group in Theoretical Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate opening for a creative, resourceful, and highly motivated post-doctoral research associate. The successful candidate will develop cutting-edge methods for numerical solution of very large partial differential equation systems, with an emphasis on uncertainty quantification. The fundamental research will involve development of efficient methods for (1) computational solution for predicting the propagation of statistical uncertainty in partial differential equation systems on graphs; and (2) mathematical optimization formulations for optimal control of dynamic systems that account for probabilistic constraints that effectively represent uncertainty. The methods will be applied to the modeling and control of very large-scale natural and engineered network systems. The successful candidate will be expected to work in an interdisciplinary team environment and interact with scientists working in numerical methods, applied mathematics, data science, statistical physics, machine learning, optimal control, and power system engineering in different organizations of the Laboratory.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
A PhD in Applied Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Electrical Engineering, Computational Science, or related fields completed within the last four years
Proficiency in probabilistic reasoning and uncertainty quantification
Ability to conduct independent and collaborative research in a multi-disciplinary environment
Scientific/numerical programming experience in Julia, C++, Python, Java, or MATLAB
Extensive experience and strong track record in scientific computing and numerical methods for differential equations
Experience with optimization software and packages such as ipopt, cplex, gurobi, etc.
Experience in solving practical science and engineering problems
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Ability to meet the tight schedules, organize and prioritize tasks for effective achievements of project goals

Where You Will Work
The Applied Mathematics & Plasma Physics (T-5) group maintains mathematical, theory, modeling, and simulation capabilities in a broad set of areas. Current activities in the group include nonlinear partial differential equations with many applications; application of recent discoveries in mathematics and physics to the analysis of large data sets; computational neuroscience; computational biology & biophysics, network analysis; plasma physics; software engineering; and algorithm development for scalable scientific computing on novel parallel architectures.
The Advanced Network Science Initiative (ANSI) is a focal point for the Laboratory’s optimization, machine learning, and control capabilities.
