Los Alamos National Laboratory Nuclear Weapon Design Quality Engineer (R&D Engineer 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Report to the Weapon Quality Program Office Leader within the Associate Directorate for Weapons Engineering and be a contributing member to a dynamic team of engineers and quality professionals responsible for engaging with system and test engineers, surveillance engineers, production liaisons, and production organizations responsible for nuclear weapon development, testing, design, realization, and surveillance. This role provides both quality oversight and supports nuclear weapon anti-subversion efforts, working as part of product realization teams, facilitating and documenting failure modes analysis, ensuring necessary and sufficient operational controls, and monitoring ongoing activities that support nuclear weapon-related production. The selected candidate must be able to operate independently and must exercise personal initiative in successfully completing assigned tasks. S/he will apply technical expertise in hardware design, fabrication, and knowledge of engineering kclassified setting, and must demonstrate a strong commitment towards security, safety and compliance. The position will involve travel to production locations with varying frequency.

This posting is under the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Engineering (ALDW).

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Successful first-hand experience with production, design, and quality assurance of high consequence product/production operations; innovating, developing, and applying quality system requirements to complex and often ambiguous issues.

  • Assisting & leading quality assurance system implementation, maintenance, and/or performance-based audits, assessments, and surveillances to facilitate improvements in designs, processes, product, or product yields.

  • Demonstrated experience in the facilitation and documentation of FMEA and/or other technical risk analysis methodologies to characterize risks and identify suitable controls.

  • Thorough knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: aerospace, chemical, electrical, mechanical, or nuclear engineering.

  • Demonstrated strong communication (written and verbal) and presentation skills.

Education/Experience:

Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to interpret various mechanical, and/or electrical documents, blueprints, drawings and schematics; familiarity with ASME Y14.5M standard.

  • Demonstrated success in providing customer service and establishing strong customer relations.

  • Experience working with collaboratively with suppliers of materials, parts, or assemblies to influence improvements in production, product compliance, or product yield.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply statistical methods to analyze issues, failures, and effectiveness of controls.

  • Record of successful influencing and teaming in a multi-discipline environment to overcome technical challenges.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
