Los Alamos National Laboratory Nuclear Data Scientist (Scientist 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2/Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Scientist 2 $94,100 - $155,700

Are you looking to begin a career in computational physics? If so, please keep reading to learn about an exciting opportunity in our Materials and Physical Data group (XCP-5). We are looking for a highly motivated scientist to work on the development of higher fidelity nuclear data libraries to be used primarily in simulations for stockpile stewardship and global security applications. Considerable effort is underway at LANL and elsewhere to improve the measurements of relevant data, the theory used to describe these reactions, the uncertainties in both, and understand their impact on these applications. In this role, you will work with these communities, both nationally and internationally, to help develop, implement and validate new physics models, new data libraries and support their use.

Scientist 3 $113,100 - $190,900

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will be expected to mentor junior staff as well as students and postdocs. You will also be expected to seek out funding for and lead small to medium sized projects.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge

You will need to have a demonstrated scientific acheivement in one or more of the following related fields: nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, nuclear data evaluations, nuclear data experiments.

Nuclear Data Applications

For this role you will need to have experience with one or more nuclear data applications, e.g. criticality safety, reactor physics, stockpile or global security applications, etc.

Computer Languages

You must have experience with compiled (e.g., C++) and scripting (e.g., Python) computer language(s).

Collaboration

Team work is essential to the success of our group. You will need to have demonstrated the ability to function effectively in a team environment with a willingness to learn new skills and be flexible in work assignments. This includes exhibiting professional conduct in interactions with co-workers and supervisors.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Mentorship

At this level you will be expected to have experience mentoring students, postdocs and/or more junior staff.

Project Leadership

For this level you will need to have demonstrated experience successfully leading small to medium sized projects.

Funding

Our level 3 Scientists are expected to have the ability to find and expand funding for small to medium sized projects.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, or related area from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience. Preference may be given to candidates with a Master’s or PhD.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master’s degree in nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, or related field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Preference may be given to candidates with a Master’s or PhD.

Desired Qualifications:

Nuclear Data Processing Codes

It would be great if you had experience with nuclear data processing codes (e.g., NJOY) to build and verify application libraries.

Neutron Transport Codes

It would be a plus if experience with neutron transport codes (e.g., MCNP, PARTISN) to perform neutronics simulation analysis and validation

Nuclear Data Formats

It would be nice if you had previous knowledge of nuclear data formats, e.g., ENDF, GNDS, ACE.

Software Development

It would be an added bonus if you had experience with software development process and tools, HPC, and user support.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
