Los Alamos National Laboratory Nonproliferation Application Developer (R&D Engineer 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The International Threat Reduction Group (NEN-3) is seeking an R&D Engineer to join a mission-focused team. NEN-3, International Threat Reduction applies expertise in nuclear and radiological material and commodities detection, packaging, international training and consultation, modeling and simulation to reduce nuclear proliferation and enhance global security in a changing threat environment.
Work in NEN-3 includes the research, development, and implementation of novel technology and solutions to identify, monitor, track and recover nuclear and radiological materials related to the Global Security mission. These efforts include the development and management of creative and innovative software solutions with a focus on systems that model nuclear/radiological facility process flows; simulate nuclear/radiological worker actions and operations; track nuclear/radiological material storage, movement, and use; enhance treaty verification capabilities; and other applications directly related to nuclear security and safeguards. In addition as a contributing member of a team, help refine team objectives and work with other team members in scheduling commitments and resources.
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
R&D Engineer 2 ($94,000.00 - $155,700.00)
In support of R&D initiatives, contributes to the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of software engineering and software development solutions.
Develops a technical approach and new methods or techniques, using creativity in applying standard software engineering practices and procedures, which lead to new or improved capabilities directly supporting global security efforts.
Sets direction and goals for well-defined tasks involving more than one person.
Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer(s) to establish design requirements, scope, schedule, and cost.
Mentors early career staff and peers in technical and professional growth.
R&D Engineer 3 ($113,100.00 - $190,900.00)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level additional duties would include:
In support of R&D initiatives, leads the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of novel software engineering and software development solutions.
Develops new technical capabilities and creates opportunities to extend R&D software engineering through the expansion of existing efforts.
Leads the development of technical products such as journal papers, reports, presentations, and concept papers,
Leads technical decision-making at task level within a software development project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives.
Actively mentors and trains early career staff and peers in technical and professional growth.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn and develop skills that support other areas within NEN-3. The group has ongoing work in nuclear materials management, radiation detector testing and deployment and software development addressing global security problems.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Minimum of three (3) years of experience related to the design, development, and maintenance of software applications, systems, and solutions including full stack development.
Knowledge/understanding of software engineering principles, design patterns, and appropriate standards.
Experience with modern software development methodologies, tools and processes.
Knowledge/experience with programming languages, database design, security strategies and component integration
Knowledge/understanding of hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client server principles.
Knowledge/understanding of hardware and software integration and testing.
Experience translating scientific or engineering requirements into software applications.
Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
Make decisions and solve problems.
Exercise good judgment while working with minimal supervision and prioritizing workload.
- Demonstrated communication skills including documentation and presentation skills.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Minimum of six (6) years of experience related to the design, development, and maintenance of software applications, systems, and solutions including full stack development.
In-depth knowledge of software engineering principles, design patterns, and appropriate standards.
Demonstrated ability to design, plan, and execute software development projects.
In-depth knowledge and experience with modern software development methodologies, tools and processes.
In-depth knowledge and experience with programming languages, database design, security strategies and component integration.
In-depth knowledge/understanding of hardware and software integration and testing.
Demonstrated history of work with multi-disciplinary teams, fostering a teaming environment, and providing effective leadership and mentorship for team members
Demonstrated history in driving process improvement.
Demonstrated ability for self-directed work, planning, and prioritization.
- Demonstrated communication skills working with subject matter experts and end users to define requirements.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Software Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Software Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Developing software applications related to nuclear facility operations, material tracking, and/or inventories.
Developing applications for detector integration and interfaces.
Familiarity with Software Quality Assurance for safety related software application development.
Familiarity with nuclear facilities and materials related operations.
Demonstrated experience with requirements gathering and documentation for nuclear engineering related projects.
Familiarity with Agile frameworks, tools and techniques.
Scrum Master certification.
Active Q Clearance.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
