Los Alamos National Laboratory .NET Developer (Software Developer 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Join our world-class software development team! Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for a .NET software developer to join our Environmental, Safety, Health, Quality Security and Visualization Solutions Group (SAE-1) in support of the Human Resources (HR) and Institutional Quality & Performance Assurance (IQPA) divisions. Software Developer 3 ($94,100 - $155,700)

The Software Developer level 3 will report to the SAE-1 Group Leader within the Software and Applications Engineering (SAE) Division. The successful candidate must have advanced level experience building full stack applications using the .NET Framework and Core. Experience using modern Javascript frameworks like the MERN tech stack is also desireable as well as excellent organization skills, and the ability to multi-task. The successful candidate should also have a strong desire to learn new technologies and the willingness and confidence to develop safety-class, mission-critical software.

Software Developer 4 ($103,500 - $172,800)

The Software Developer level 4 will report to the SAE-1 Group Leader within the SAE Division. In addition to what was outlined above, at this level the candidate must be an expert in building full stack applications using the .NET Framework and Core. The successful candidate should be an expert in their field, have extensive experience in mentoring other junior software developers, and demonstrate the ability to architect state-of-the art web and mobile solutions.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge

We are looking for someone with knowledge and experience designing, developing, modifying, testing, and debugging web, mobile, and Windows applications using .NET and modern frameworks like the MERN tech stack. You should have a complete and advanced understanding of:

  • C#, .Net Core

  • JavaScript frameworks (Node.js, Vue.js, Angular.js, React, and/or Express.js)

  • Web Service Frameworks using various protocols (REST, SOAP, WSDL, XML-RPC, XML)

  • Relational Databases like MS SQL Server, Maria DB, etc

  • Experience with automated software testing methologies (unit, integration, system, security, performance) preferably using NUnit, TFS, Azure DevOps Services and/or Cypress

  • Software version control (TFVC, Git, or GitLab) and build automation tools

  • Experience working within a team leveraging Scrum or other Agile methodologies focused on continuous improvement.

  • Experience using tools such as Atlassian Jira and Confluence to manage work


We are looking for someone who can work well in a team-oriented environment with the ability to communicate and collaborate cross-functionally within and outside of the group. In addition, you must have effective interpersonal skills for communicating technical information, building relationships, and resolving conflicts.


This position will require you to research new technologies and tools, incorporate their usage into new products and services, and mentor junior developers.

Time Management

You should have strong multitasking capabilities and the ability to work on multiple products and issues simultaneously.

Additional Job Requirements for level 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, as a level 4, you will be expected to lead projects and teams, mentor other developers; be expected to find solutions to complex technical issues; and be regarded as an expert .NET developer. We will also expect you to evaluate and recommend new tools and technology stacks to ensure that the organization is utilizing the best tools and methologies in the market.

Education/Experience – level 3

This position requires a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of eight years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience – level 4

This position requires a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of twelve years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience developing solutions with NoSQL solutions like Mongo

  • Experience working with continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD)

  • Experience using Docker and Kubernetes to build container based microservices

  • Experience with Java, JavaScript, and Python programming languages

  • Experience managing or leading large complex projects

  • Experience upgrading, supporting, extending, and enhancing Commercial off the Shelf Products (COTS) and integrating with SaaS applications

This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
