Job Information

Los Alamos National Laboratory Mechanical Testing and Electrochemistry Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

MPA-CINT and Sigma-2 are seeking outstanding postdoc candidates for developing a novel in situ mechanical testing device to characterize microscale specimens (1 100 um). The device will integrate compressive/tensile mechanical loading capabilities in liquid cell to examine materials response at coupled mechanical loading and corrosion environments. Techniques will be developed for conventional, additive manufactured, and ion/neutron irradiated structural metals with the capacity to extend the system and technique to materials relevant to core LANL programs.

The successful candidate will work with a team of experimentalist and modelers to explore and understand the new degradation mechanisms under coupled straining and corrosion extremes. The position will be awarded to the candidate demonstrating exceptional talent with a successful collaborative and scientific track record.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expertise in nanoindentation or other similar nanoscale mechanical tests

  • Experience of characterizing surface morphology and defects using scanning electron microscope (SEM), especially with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) skills.

  • Hands-on experience to build or develop mechanical testing stages/platforms

  • Demonstrated knowledge of metals deformation and corrosion behavior

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with in situ SEM mechanical testing

  • Experience in Electrochemistry and Corrosion

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which generally requires US citizenship.

Education: A PhD in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related engineering discipline completed within the last 5 years or soon to be completed.

Note to Applicants: For technical questions related to this position contact Drs. Nan Li ( nanli@lanl.gov ), Jamie Stull (jamie.stull@lanl.gov), and Daniel Hooks (dhooks@lanl.gov).
