Los Alamos National Laboratory Manufacturing Manager 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Finishing Manufacturing Science Group (Sigma-2) is seeking outstanding candidates for a Manufacturing Manager 3 (MM3) position to lead and manage the Welding and Joining Team. Reporting to the Sigma-2 Group Leader, the MM3 will be responsible for overseeing the manufacturing and R&D activities for multidisciplinary production and scientific projects involving actinide materials for the team. The duties of a successful MM3 include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the Team Leader of the Welding and Joining Team, overseeing the daily activities of scientists, engineers, technologists, technicians, and skilled support employees within the team.

  • Effectively promote teamwork in accomplishing objectives, including mentoring and motivating peers and subordinates.

  • Oversee execution of work that supports programmatic milestones and deliverables, primarily within the Sigma Facility.

  • Lead work package development, budget oversight and management, resource management, and strategic objective planning in support of group deliverables and milestones.

  • Engage with key team stakeholders and operational partners such as: Group Management, Sigma Division Support Staff, Program Office personnel, Safety Basis Personnel, Facilities Personnel, Maintenance Support Staff, and external Group and Division partners or customers.

  • Facilitate operational stand ups and work authorizations in response to facility pauses or work stoppages.

  • Ensure adherence to Conduct of Operations through: worker qualification and authorization reviews; verification that administrative and operating procedures are current, understood and adhered to before releasing work; and compliance with nuclear facility requirements.

  • Work with Group Management and Support Staff to determine team workflow priorities, while managing time effectively to deal with changing priorities.

  • Identify and implement continuous process improvement initiatives to maintain an agile and resilient workforce.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated record of successful technical leadership and proven ability in supervising, resolving conflicts, administering discipline, mentoring, motivating employees, and developing personnel.

  • Knowledge of high energy density welding, additive manufacturing, brazing, arc welding, and other related aspects of metallurgy and welding.

  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating work activities in a highly regulated environment and tracking/reporting progress on a regular cadence.

  • Thorough knowledge of and experience performing work in a manufacturing environment and executing work in compliance with facility requirements, conduct of operations, conduct of engineering, and conduct of maintenance standards.

  • Demonstrated experience working with confidential personnel information, confidential or proprietary information, classified documents or sensitive information.

  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers.

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which usually requires US citizenship.

Education/Experience : Position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience of work execution in compliance with nuclear facility requirements, and/or experience with fissionable or hazardous material management.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of high energy density welding, additive manufacturing or vacuum furnace brazing.

  • Knowledgeable in Integrated Work Management (IWM) and integrated safety and security management (ISSM) procedures.

  • Experience with nuclear facility operating requirements, safety authorization basis and/or Conduct of Operations planning and execution.

  • Knowledge of Sigma and its programs, specifically Welding and Joining Team activities.

  • Active Q Clearance.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
