Los Alamos National Laboratory Machinist Apprentice in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Machinist Apprentice Program is managed by Prototype Fabrication (PF) Division, and is an institutional program developing Journeyman Machinists. Prototype Fabrication is a division consisting of two groups whose mission is to provide machining, fabrication, welding, inspection, as well as life-cycle support on machine tool systems for the Laboratory. Capabilities include: Precision Fabrications in a wide variety of materials and sizes; Dimensional Inspection; Preventative and Corrective Maintenance; Fabrication Systems Support; and Fabrication Technology and Engineering for machine tool design/development. Located across six technical areas, PF manages the diverse machine tooling and resources necessary for fabrication and manufacturing in support of multiple programs while adhering to Lab, federal, DOE and state requirements.

Selected students will work under the direction of Journeyman Machinists at a variety of LANL sites and organizations, gaining on-the-job experience while providing fabrication support to a variety of customers both internal and external to the Laboratory including: Hydrotesting, Joint Test Assembly (JTA), Subcrit, Life Extension Program (LEP), production (NCD), Threat Reduction programs, Pu Sustainment/Pit Manufacturing, Pit Surveillance, and Pu Science Campaigns. As part of the apprenticeship, students will work to complete competencies based on the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Certified Machinist Training and Apprenticeship Program Curriculum, as well as Curriculum specific to LANL needs such as Fissionable Material Handler training. Achievement of competencies will be measured through a combination of demonstrations and theory exams.

Expectation: Students will be expected to work towards fulfilling the defined theory and practical education requirements needed for obtaining a Journeyman certificate through the State Apprenticeship Agency (SAA). During the course of the apprenticeship, students must obtain specified NIMS credentials for progression through the program. If selected for the Apprenticeship Program you will be considered a limited term employee for the term of the apprenticeship. Upon completion of the program a full time Journeyman Machinist position may be offered which may require you to work in hazardous and/or radioactive areas.

The position is located in Los Alamos, NM.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age

  • Have a high school diploma, or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

  • Hold a certificate of completion in machine tool technology from an accredited technical college; or have 3 years relevant experience to include both CNC and Manual machining, preferably in a prototype shop

  • Applicants must have an interest in and aptitude for machining/mechanics

  • Knowledge of mathematics through trigonometry

  • Effective verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills

Position does require selected candidates to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Security clearance, which generally requires U.S. citizenship. Selected candidates will be subject to a pre-employment background check and drug screening. All LANL workers are subject to random drug testing during the course of employment.

If an Apprentice is offered and accepts a position as a machinist and fails to work at LANL in a Machining/Technical position for a period of two years, they will be required to pay back program costs.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
