Los Alamos National Laboratory Low-Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Machine Learning Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

A Postdoctoral position in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy with a focus on Machine Learning approaches to chemical and biochemical applications of low magnetic field and Earth’s magnetic field detection systems, developed at LANL, is available for a motivated candidate.. The Bioenergy and Biome Sciences Group (B-11) in the Bioscience Division is seeking uniquely qualified candidates to study and apply machine learning methodologies to nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy on a variety of materials of interest. The project will involve computational, experimental, theoretical, and hardware development efforts for the detection of unique chemical and biochemical signatures at low magnetic fields (<1mT) for analytical applications and structure identification of materials. The postdoc will join the highly successful Low Field Magnetic Resonance Team which received a 2020 R&D100 Award in analytical instrumentation for SEDONA and is a current contender for a 2021 R&D100 Award for ERDE an Earth’s field spectrometer. The integrated, multidisciplinary Low Field Magnetic Resonance Team consists of scientists specializing in physics, chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, and engineering from across LANL.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Deep understanding of advanced statistical methods including, but not limited to deep neural networks and non-negative matrix factorization.

  • Experience building and modifying NMR instrumentation

  • Knowledge of ab initio NMR simulations

  • Experience in acquisition and interpretation of NMR data and multidimensional data sets

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills as evidenced by a strong publication and presentation record.

  • Ability to obtain a Q-clearance (Requires US Citizenship)

Education/Experience : A Ph.D. completed within the last five years or will have completed all PhD requirements by commencement of appointment.

Desired Qualifications:

Knowledge of parahydrogen hyperpolarization techniques, zero to ultra-low field NMR, Earth’s field NMR, solid state NMR, high field (700 MHz) cryoprobe NMR, modern pulse programming techniques, Labview, Matlab and/or Python programming.
