Los Alamos National Laboratory Linux System Administrator (Scientist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Accelerator Operations Technology (AOT) Division, Instrumentation and Controls Group (AOT-IC) is looking to hire a systems administrator whose primary responsibility will be toinstall, configure, and maintain our Linux operating systems. Specifically, the successful applicant will monitor systems performance, ensure compliance with security standards, create user accounts/reports, installnew patches and software releases, and making backups using Linux tools and command-line interface tools.In general, thesuccessful applicant will be responsible for a nalyzing and resolving problems associated with the operating system's servers, hardware, applications, and software.

As a member of AOT-IC, the successful applicant will be part of the Software Controls Team whose primary responsibility is to support the operation of the control and data acquisition systems deployed at the LANSCE User Facility. In addition to the system administrator role, the successful applicant has the opportunity to learn about and participate in control-system operational and maintenance support. In this role the applicant would collaborate with other people inside and outside our group that have a background in controls engineering, physics, operations, instrumentation and controls, and others.

The Division that AOT-IC is part of provides systems engineering, program management, and operational support to ensure the safety and reliability of the LANSCE accelerator complex. AOT Division is responsible for the operation, maintenance and engineering upgrades necessary to provide high quality beams to a variety of experimental and production facilities. AOT-IC preforms a number of technical functions in support of AOT Division goals.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience managing all aspects of Linux servers, File servers, and network file system (NFS) mounts and workstations.

  • Experience in Linux server administration including setup, deployment, maintenance and backup.

  • Demonstrated programming experience with scripting languages such as bash, Python, Tcl/Tk, and/or Perl.

  • Demonstrated analytical skills to examine error logs, system performance data, and user information to ensure a high level of usability and reliability

  • Experience with best practices and techniques to maintain and enhance information security

  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Availability for rotating on-call support or after-hours work when required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience configuring, managing, and monitoring a TCP/IP network using standard Linux tools.

  • Programing experience working directly with source code to resolve incompatibilities and improve system performance.

  • Demonstrated programming experience with compiled languages such as C, C++, and/or Java.

  • Experience developing and managing websites and static/dynamic web content.

  • Experience developing and maintaining technical documentation.

Education: A minimum of a Bachelor’s (M.S. or Ph.D. preferred) in computer science, computer engineering, electrical or controls engineering, physics or physical science, or related fields plus two years’ experience.

Work Environment: Working in widely ranging ambient temperatures, working overtime or irregular schedule, operation of motor vehicles, work in a noisy environment, work near electrical power supplies, work near sources of ionizing radiation, work near sources of non-ionizing radiation, and work near machinery with moving parts.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
