Los Alamos National Laboratory Industrial Hygiene & Safety Manager 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

As a member of the Occupational Safety and Health (OS&H) Division leadership team, you will work with OS&H management to provide technical leadership and management for the Deployed Safety Group (OSH‐DS). As the Industrial Hygiene & Safety (IH&S) manager 3, you will lead your team of Industrial Hygiene and Safety professionals and technicians in the support of programmatic and facility organizations and their implementation of health and safety in their activities. This support includes providing counsel, advice and assistance on industrial hygiene and safety programs, performing qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments, work management reviews, activity walk downs and oversight functions lending to compliance with Department of Energy requirements. Often must lead a cooperative effort among members of a project team, working on issues of a diverse health and safety scope.

As the Industrial Hygiene and Safety Manager (3) you will be responsible for all aspects of personnel management, including but not limited to: managing headcount, forecasting and budget(s) associated with team, directing assignments, issues management, metrics achievement, employee hiring and on-boarding processes, providing continuous performance management and feedback to further develop staff including annual performance discussions, identification of growth opportunities and ensuring proper team recognition and appreciation.

Leadership and Management Skills

Demonstrated excellence in leadership and management experience collaborating, managing, interacting, and working effectively with personnel at all levels with emphasis on continual learning and improvement, team‐building, prioritizing, managing resources, and meeting organizational objectives and deadlines. Demonstrated skill in management, supervision and human resources administration of assigned employees.

Federal Codes, Standards and Regulations

Demonstrated experience and knowledge in the identification, application and interpretation of federal codes, standards, and regulations in industrial hygiene and safety program areas, including chemical safety, beryllium, exposure assessment, confined spaces, hoisting/rigging, lasers, and fall protection using a risk‐based, cost/benefit approach.

Strategic Planning

Proven record of leading an organization in strategic planning, operational planning, program implementation and communication and execution of projects and deliverables to meet organizational goals and objectives.

Performance Assurance

Demonstrated experience with the development and application of metrics, training and qualifications, and lessons learned to improve performance and reduce risks through modification of work practices and processes.


Demonstrated effectiveness in interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.


  • Bachelor's degree (Master’s degree preferred) in industrial hygiene, environmental health or occupational safety or related discipline and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation

  • This position may be subject to DOE Order 5480.20A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

Desired Qualifications:


  • Certification in Industrial Hygiene by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and/or

  • Certified Safety Professional by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

Program, Policy, Procedure Implementation

  • Thorough knowledge and experience implementing industrial hygiene and/or occupational safety programs, policies, and procedures in an R&D, production and construction environment.

  • Thorough knowledge and experience implementing Department of Energy‐based requirements, including 10 CFR 851 Worker Safety and Health Program and Integrated Safety Management (ISM).

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 -Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA SupplementalDirective 206.2.
