The Environment, Safety, Health, Quality, Safeguards and Security Directorate’s mission is to support and enable the Laboratory to accomplish its assigned mission. ALDESHQSS tasks are varied, but they all have one focus: protection of the workers, public, and environment while getting work done. The Occupational Safety and Health Division’s mission is to identify and control workplace hazards; prevent injuries and illnesses; develop policy and programs for biological, chemical and physical hazards; develop and provide training; maintain centralized data; encourage continual improvement in workplace safety and health; and manage safety concerns.

Within the Industrial Safety and Hygiene (ISH) institutional programs group, the Industrial Hygiene Team Leader’s primary responsibility is to manage the team of individuals that provide industrial hygiene program support and guidance to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) programmatic, facility organizations and deployed Industrial Hygiene and Safety Professionals in the field. The Industrial Hygiene Team Leader will lead Safety Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) to evaluate situations, determine risks in accordance with institutional requirements, and assist customers. This manager will develop and implement cost-effective solutions and promote safety requirements. The Industrial Hygiene Team Leader will be responsible for tactical execution, ensuring operational excellence, continuous improvement, and delivering high quality customer service while maintaining effective relationships with principal stakeholders. This position will ensure that the assigned industrial hygiene team develops and maintains the capabilities necessary to support LANL mission success.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Supervisory or technical lead experience in Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene disciplines, and/or related field.

  • Experience with interpreting and applying, Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene programs, compliance oversight, documentation, and corrective action development.

  • Effective leadership skills with an emphasis on team building and program development.

  • Record of strong leadership and directing staff; demonstrating operational excellence, setting objectives, and meeting milestones.

  • Innovative problem solving that has produced measurable improvements through the development and application of metrics, training qualifications, to improve performance.

  • Knowledge and application of risk-based decision-making.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategic/tactical team goals and objectives that align with the overall vision of an organization.

  • Experience with interpreting and implementing industrial hygiene and/or safety programs, compliance oversight, documentation, and corrective action development.

  • Communicates in a strong and thorough manner with superiors and direct reports.

  • Demonstrated application of conduct and formality of operations, including the application of high standards, and achievement of high quality results in Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene Programs.

Training/Certifications: Certifications in relevant field (CIH, CSP)

Education/Experience : A bachelor's degree in related technical discipline and 5 years relevant professional-level experience, or equivalent combination of relevant education and professional-level experience. An advanced degree preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in the following areas desired: personnel management, financial management, and operational management (i.e. safety, security, environment, facility).

  • Experience interfacing with programmatic and/or project management and a broad knowledge of all Laboratory organizations and activities.

  • Knowledge of LANL and DOE/NNSA mission and LANS management systems and requirements, including personnel, budgeting, procurement, and safety.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
