What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
As the ICS Systems Engineer you will be a member of the Engineering Services – Utilities & Infrastructure (ES-UI) Utility Team and perform general support related tasks including; designs, installations, updates, system hardware and software maintenance, troubleshooting, and problem resolution related primarily to Building Automation Systems (BAS) Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and some Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems used in the LANL Utilities and Infrastructure Division. The primary function of the position is to support Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems including but not limited to ICS Systems for a Waste Water Plant, a Steam Plant, a Combustion Gas Turbine Generator, a sanitary effluent reclamation facility (SERF), and several lift stations and water towers.
Engineer 1 $85,400 - $139,600
Configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting Industrial Control Systems from a variety of PLC and hardware vendors.
Reading and writing control sequences using ladder logic and function block programming to develop new or modified functionality in a PLC.
Working with other controls team members to integrate PLC systems data into the data historian and analytics platform (SkySpark).
Configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting Communication Servers, Historian Data Server and Terminal Server Clients (PC’s).
Analyzing and troubleshooting network connectivity via Ethernet, Fiber, Modbus Protocol, BACnet and TCP/IP.
Analyzing and troubleshooting network connectivity at both the TCP/IP and serial communication layers.
Analyzing, testing, and troubleshooting general ICS issues and reported problems.
Standardizing schematics, programs and components; create and/or update user documentation, engineering drawings, maps, diagrams, flow charts, technical documents, etc.
Maintaining the database to track inventory and licensing agreements for ICS system hardware, software, firmware updates, IP addresses, ids/passwords in a centralized storage methodology.
Maintaining, keeping current and backing-up all PLC programs and configurations.
Other tasks as needed that may include Building Automation controls systems support, remote monitoring, and disparate systems integrations.
Engineer 2 $94,100 - $155,700
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level additional duties would include:
Assist in defining maintenance requirements including corrective maintenance and the tracking and trending of system performance.
Define and maintain technical baseline criteria and documents in support of facility configuration management.
Support associated safety analyses and hazards evaluations
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
One (1) to Two (2) years of experience in an institutional or industrial facility with emphasis on industrial control systems, programming, SCADA systems and process automation.
Functional computer and networking skills. Some programming experience in ladder logic, Python, C++, Matlab, or similar languages.
Electronics troubleshooting skill and familiarity with diagnostic tools.
Ability to define unprecedented problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions by extending accepted methods or developing new ones.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Ability to develop program work plans designed to improve or expand current service levels.
Additional Job Requirements for Engineer 2:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Three (3) or more years of experience in an institutional or industrial facility with emphasis on industrial control systems, programming, SCADA systems and process automation.
Familiarity with DOE standards applicable to facility design, operation, and maintenance.
Basic Knowledge of the national codes and standards for Electrical and I&C Engineering.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 0 to 2 years of practical work experience.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
