Los Alamos National Laboratory High Energy Nuclear Physics Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Physics Division at Los Alamos National Lab is recruiting a postdoc in theNuclear and Particle Physics and Applications Group (P-3)to work on the sPHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider with focus on the heavy flavor physics and the MVTX silicon pixel detector upgrade. The successful candidate will also have an opportunity to participate in physics analysis using existing data from LHCb, PHENIX or Fermilab E906/SeaQuest experiments. The list of major duties includes:

  • Play a major role in the sPHENIX open heavy flavor physics program development, detector and physics simulations, and carry out the Day-1 sPHENIX B-hadron and/or b-jet studies in 2023 and beyond

  • Actively participate in the on-going MVTX silicon pixel detector upgrade, play a key role in the MVTX detector R&D, construction, installation and commissioning at BNL in 2022-2023

  • Obtain a publication record from available data from three options: 1) heavy ion program in LHCb; 2) heavy flavor using single muons in PHENIX; or 3) Drell-Yan and dark photon search analysis using E906/SeaQuest data.

The postdoc term is for two years, with an option for a third year. Outstanding candidates have a chance to be considered for the prestigious Richard P. Feynman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Frederick Reines or Darleane Christian Hoffman Fellowships at the Lab. Applications are considered until the position is filled.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in high-energy particle or nuclear physics within the past five years, or soon to be completed

  • Experience with nuclear or particle physics data analysis

  • Good understanding of detector operation and simulations

  • Physics paper publications

Desired Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with detector R&D, readout electronics and control software or firmware

  • Working knowledge of particle physics event generators and GEANT simulation

  • Creativity and independence in conducting research, proposing new physics ideas and experiments

Education : A Ph.D. (completed in 2016 or later) in physics or a related field is required.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
