Los Alamos National Laboratory Gas Facility (Transportation Specialist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The selected candidate will report to the LANL Gas Facility Operations Manager, under Logistics - Packaging & Transportation (LOG-PT), and will provide gas delivery and pickup operational and administrative support to the Gas Facility. The Gas Facility offers a variety of services including but not limited to scheduling & delivery of gas shipments across the Laboratory including specialty gas orders, chemical management and engineering services. As a member of the Gas Facility’s Transportation Specialist team, the selected candidate will be primarily responsible for coordination of, schedules and transports hazardous materials/compressed gases. Coordinating daily operational activities on behalf of Gas Facility team members including the delivery and pickup of gasses on-site and off-site (as necessary) and internal and external communications with customers & subcontractors. The Transportation Specialist will be responsible for other tasks, including but not limited to: processes & procedure development, inventory control, and participation in projects and assessments. Quality-related support functions will be requested as needed. Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to hazardous materials.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to transport hazardous materials or compressed gases in a government vehicle in accordance with 49 CFR / Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and Compressed Gas Association (CGA) regulations.

  • The selected candidate may also have to transport Class 2 nuclear material - in accordance with LANL material control and accountability handbook.

  • Must have the ability to secure and un-secure of compressed gas cylinders / dewars on transport vehicles in accordance with federal motor carrier safety requirements

  • Participates in process improvement meetings and integrated work process (Teamwork)

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications. Exceptional customer service, organizational skills and ability to interact with all levels of personnel internal and external to the Laboratory.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with business software, computer hardware, and use of Laboratory systems. (Microsoft Office and Sharepoint)

  • Demonstrated experience in decision making, organizing and prioritizing tasks, and taking initiative. Experience with planning and scheduling work activities, and the ability to multitask.

  • Demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, resolving discrepancies and recommending solutions on problems affecting daily operations. Detail-oriented and attention to detail necessary.

Training-certifications:

  • Candidate must be willing to training to 49 CFR Hazardous Material / Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.

  • Candidate must complete training requirements for Authorized Shipper/HMPT training. Knowledge of Pressure Safety & Gas Cylinder Safety.

  • Candidate must be willing to train & qualify as a Department of Transportation (DOT) Authorized Shipper for all Hazard Class 2 Materials.

Education:

  • Position requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience related to the occupation.

Desired Skills: Job Knowledge

  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Hazardous Material and Tanker Endorsements.

  • Current LANL Issued CDL Medical Certificate.

  • Los Alamos National Laboratory Driver Qualification File.

  • Knowledge of federal, state and laboratory hazardous material transport standards, policies, and regulations.

  • Knowledge and experience in hazardous material/compressed gas packaging and transportation.

  • Knowledge of federal, state and local nuclear and or hazardous material/compressed gas standards and regulations.

  • Knowledge of laboratory objectives and other statements of policy/practice/procedures.

Essential Job Functions: Vision, speech and hearing; General physical mobility

Work Environment: Protective clothing

Additional Details:

  • Ability to work extended hours on short notice.

  • Ability to provide driver support on and off-site shipment, which may require 1 to 2 days travel.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
