Los Alamos National Laboratory Experimental Condensed Matter Physics Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Strongly Correlated Electron Team at Los Alamos National Laboratory has an immediate opening for one postdoctoral position with an emphasis on the synthesis and characterization of narrow-gap semiconducting quantum materials. Our multifaceted, highly collaborative team explores new physics through new materials, and our capabilities include single crystal growth, characterization, device fabrication, measurements under extreme conditions (high pressure, high fields, and low temperature). Our interest for this project focuses on ultra-clean narrow-gap semiconductors that can be used for dark matter detection in the light mass range. The successful applicant will benefit not only from a highly interactive environment within our team but also from the close proximity of the NHMFL pulsed magnetic field facility, the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (MPA-CINT), and the theoretical condensed matter group at Los Alamos. We seek highly motivated individuals who are passionate about materials science, physics, and chemistry to develop and explore new ideas on narrow-gap semiconductors including Zintl phases, correlated hybridization gaps, and charge-density-wave instabilities. What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
A strong background in experimental condensed matter physics.
The ability to communicate effectively across multiple levels of peers and supervisors.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and the ability to work independently, creatively, and as part of a team.
Demonstrated abilities in writing peer reviewed publications.
Expertise in one or more of the following areas: o Single crystal growth using different techniques, e.g., flux growth, chemical vapor transport, Bridgman, and Czochralski; o Basic characterization (e.g. electrical and thermal transport, magnetization, and specific heat) of single crystals at cryogenic temperatures; o Measurements at cryogenic temperatures (He4, He3, dilution, or adiabatic demagnetization cryostats).
Experience in scanning and transmission electron microscopy.
Experience in x-ray and neutron diffraction measurements.
Experience in single crystal optimization and purification.
Strong background in the physics of narrow-gap semiconductors, including f-electron materials.
Education: A Ph.D. in Physics completed within the past five years or soon to be completed is required. The candidate will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment.
