Los Alamos National Laboratory Entry Level Electrical Engineer (R&D Engineer 1) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

ISR-4 is a space electronics and signal processing group that specializes in space based radiation measurement and basic science missions. ISR has been developing, building, and operating space based systems for over 50 years. In addition the group develops electronics for terrestrial and airborne scientific and national security applications along with the requisite ground support and test equipment. The group’s projects receive funding and requirements from various government agencies including the DOE, DOD, and NASA. Projects are executed through a close interaction between all disciplines of engineers, technicians, and scientists which fosters a highly creative and dynamic research and development environment. Projects within ISR division are developed from concept to operational support after launch or field deployment. ISR-4 is looking for highly motivated early career electrical engineers to assist in the development of custom instrumentation for various space-based detection systems. These systems can include:

  • systems being developed for the High Altitude and Space Monitoring program in support of the nonproliferation and nuclear event detection missions;

  • systems for planetary science missions;

  • smallsat and cubesat systems.

We are looking for electrical engineers with interest in digital design, analog design, power supply design or RF design.

Responsibilities include the specification, design, modeling, implementation, verification and testing of electrical circuits or FPGAs. Emphasis is on self-initiative and technical leadership in a small team environment of rapid prototype, high quality electrical assemblies.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience with advanced design & analysis tools, such as schematic capture tools, analog or digital simulation tools, electromagnetic design tools, and/or printed circuit board layout and signal integrity analysis tools

  • Demonstrated experience with advanced system design and data analysis tools, such as Matlab

  • Good oral, written and presentation communication skills

  • Experience working in a team environment

  • This position requires a Q access authorization. Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship which typically requires U.S. Citizenship to obtain, except in extremely limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

  • Demonstrated coursework and advanced studies in one or more of the following electrical engineering focus areas:

  • Digital Design

  • Synchronous design, synthesis, routing, simulation, testing, and technical documentation of FPGA or other digital circuits

  • VHDL or Verilog

  • Test benches for FPGA or ASIC based design

  • Digital circuit card design

  • RF/Microwave

  • RF/microwave components and their system applications (amplifiers, receivers, synthesizers)

  • Fabrication and packaging for RF/microwave circuits and systems

  • Transmission lines, impedance matching, and signal integrity

  • Analog Design

  • Fundamentals of analog components

  • Signal conditioning of electronic sensors

  • High speed analog to digital conversion

  • Power Supply Design

  • Linear regulators as well as switch mode power DC/DC converters

  • Power supply filtering, switching devices, protection and gate drives

  • Power supply control theory, analysis, and testing.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of configuration management and formal verification methods

  • Experience with space-flight hardware development and testing methods desirable.

  • Experience debugging & troubleshooting circuits/prototypes

  • For digital design candidates

  • Knowledge of digital communication systems and/or other digital signal processing

  • Knowledge of high speed digital interfaces

Education:

  • Minimum Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or similar

  • Preferred from an ABET accredited college or university

  • Advanced degree preferred (Master of Science or Engineering)

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
