Los Alamos National Laboratory Engineering Technologist (Engineering Technologist 1) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Technology Applications Group (A-3) uses a broad range of engineering and scientific expertise to support nuclear counter proliferation (NCP), nuclear counter terrorism (NCT), nuclear emergency response (ER) missions, defense, intelligence, and emerging technologies. In this position you will engage in mechanical design, analysis, prototype fabrication, assembly, and test support for a wide variety of projects supporting LANL’s Global Security and/or Weapons missions.
We are seeking a technologist to bring your experience and expertise in CAD along with the desire and proven ability to engage in a wide range of work. Your primary function will be to provide mechanical 3D CAD support in the development of parts and full assemblies for teams within the group and across the division. Responsibilities include modifying existing drawings/models, designing solutions from rough concepts, finite element analysis (FEA), and developing junior staff. You will often work independently and interact with engineers, technicians, machinists, inspectors and customers as part of a team to transform concepts and designs into deliverable products typically needed on short timescales to meet Global Security mission deliverables. When time allows, you may also be asked to help with assembly work, hardware testing, additive manufacturing, and customer training. Most project work is conducted at the Q and SCI levels.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated application of applied engineering principles, theory, math, and science to address technical challenges and research, including a thorough understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing principles and application techniques.
Working experience using a high-level, 3D parametric CAD system to generate models and design drawings (preferably either Creo/Pro-e or Solidworks)
Demonstrated experience (or ability to) performing complex tolerance studies in support of fabrication and assembly
Ability to work independently and in a team environment with engineers, scientists, technicians, and machinists from different disciplines and across organizations
Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills
At least 8 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education in mechanical engineering and relevant experience. Desired experience includes:
Experience providing technical direction to other staff including technicians, design/drafting personnel, machinists, or administrative staff
Experience collaborating and working across organizations and disciplines during design process
Experience in the application of work planning and control, and industry practices/standards
Applied knowledge of common engineering material selections as related to component design intent and manufacturability concerns
Experience or training in FEA software packages such as Solidworks Simulation or Creo Simulate, PCB design CAD software, and/or other applied programming or controls systems software such as Labview, Matlab, or similar
Experience with configuration management, CAD file storage solutions and data management tools such as PDMlink or similar
Knowledge and direct experience in mechanical fabrication techniques (CNC, turning, milling, additive manufacturing, injection molding, welding etc.) and/or assembly tools and techniques (hand tools, forklift, overhead crane, etc.)
Experience working in a classified environment with associated computing systems, material handling requirements, and facility limitations.
Active Q or SCI clearances
Professional certifications such as Certified Solidworks Professional or the PTC Creo certification are highly desired.
This position requires a minimum of an Associate’s degree in engineering technology, science, math, or related field and a minimum of two years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
