What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineer Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. The System Engineer position within the Engineering Services Division (ESD) is assigned to the Facility System Engineering (ES-FE) Group responsible for plant engineering services and the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program implementation at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The positions are in nuclear or non-nuclear facilities across 26 miles of the Laboratory. The program elements including processes, standards, training, and qualification are generally applicable throughout the life cycle of a facility. They exist to effectively manage risks and satisfy customer requirements, needs, and expectations in a safe, secure, cost effective, and environmentally responsible manner.

Engineering Technologist 2 $85,400 - $139,600

The position requires a skilled professional who applies principles and concepts in areas of system and facility configuration management and technical base line management. At the Engineering Technologist Level 2 the successful candidate will be expected to perform detailed technical procedures, supporting configuration management as well as defining and controlling system and facility modifications. This position will assist in the implementation of the facility safety basis, maintaining system and facility technical baselines; monitoring, tracking and trending of major systems. The selected candidate will participate in defining maintenance requirements; troubleshooting, root cause analysis; preparing detailed corrective maintenance instruction for complex or critical system as well as implementing Los Alamos National Laboratory's Conduct of Engineering program and performing facility and system walk downs.

Engineering Technologist 3 $94,100 - $155,700

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will be doing the following capabilities.

Position typically requires a seasoned, experienced professional who has the ability to independently perform

Engineered equivalency analysis; expert knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods and technology aided engineering tools to conventional and non-conventional facility and operations based engineering problems. The selected candidate must demonstrate expert knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods, engineering maintenance techniques and construction methods. Expert level in engineering including design, commissioning, troubleshooting, technical baseline maintenance, and knowledge of industry codes and standards in respective discipline.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated sound technical experience in design engineering or system engineering for nuclear or industrial facility operations

  • Demonstrated working experience with industry codes and standards

  • Demonstrated working experience in engineering including design, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance

  • Demonstrated experience with modification definition and control

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally

  • Experience with maintenance testing/ acceptance testing

  • This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Expert knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods and technology aided engineering tools to conventional and non-conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems, and engineered equivalency analysis

  • Expert knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods

  • Expert knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methods

  • Demonstrated expert-level experience in engineering including design, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance

  • Expert knowledge of industry codes and standards in respective discipline

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’ Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE and LANL standards applicable to facility design, operation, and maintenance

  • At least one year of experience in a nuclear facility

  • Awareness of LANL Quality Policies and Procedures

  • DOE Q Clearance

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
