Los Alamos National Laboratory Engineering Technologist 2/3 (Metrologist) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Join the Metrology Program and Calibration Laboratory and support the National science and security mission as a Senior Metrologist in our Electrical Section. We are seeking an exceptional metrologist to provide leadership and perform NIST-traceable calibrations and metrology solutions in support of Los Alamos National Laboratory Programs and Operations. We maintain calibration capabilities in capacitance, DC voltage, frequency dissemination, high voltage, inductance, resistance, time and frequency, and other areas.
This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
As a Metrologist/Engineering Technologist will use the principles and theories of engineering, math and science to solve technical problems within his/her discipline in support of science, engineering and engineering research. The position will support engineering/projects in the performance of complex and demanding assignments requiring initiative and independent judgment. Incumbent will be responsible for assigned activities within Electrical metrology in support of research, production, manufacturing, operation, maintenance, project and/or research-based engineering. The Engineering Technologist will provide direction to technicians, and must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Engineering principals and computer technology will be utilized to accomplish work. The successful candidate will continuously improve work processes to meet customer needs.
Metrologist/Engineering Technologist 2 ($85,400 – $139,600)
You will apply working-level electrical metrology principles, theories, concepts and techniques to calibrate a wide variety of electrical M&TE and resolve simple-to-complex calibration issues. In addition to this you will also lead and support continuous improvement in the electrical lab to improve electrical calibration technical and quality, support metrology engineers to assure technical and quality excellence, and mentor, lead, and instruct less experience electrical metrology staff.
Metrologist/ Engineering Technologist 3 ($94,100 – $155,700) required to:
At the level three you will apply advanced-level electrical metrology principles, theories, concepts and techniques to calibrate a wide variety of electrical M&TE and resolve simple-to-complex calibration issues. In addition to this you will also lead and support continuous improvement in the electrical lab to improve electrical calibration technical and quality, support metrology engineers to assure technical and quality excellence, and mentor, lead, and instruct less experience electrical metrology staff.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements
Prior experience with MetCal metrology database
Demonstrated expertise calibrating a wide-variety of simple-to-complex and one-of-a-kind electrical M&TE
Demonstrated expertise maintaining primary calibration standards, developing, and maintaining calibration procedures
Experience preparing uncertainty budgets, applying guard banding, and implementing quality control methods
Expertise supporting engineers with the development and implementation of metrology-based engineering solutions
Demonstrated experience mentoring less experienced electrical calibration technicians/metrologists

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Engineering Technologist 3 level requires:
Demonstrated advanced experience as a Metrology Lab senior metrologist responsible for ISO17025 compliant calibration operations
Proven ability to provide electrical lab leadership for Proficiency Tests, Inter-Laboratory Comparisons and NVLAP accreditation activities
- Experience with IndySoft calibration management database
Engineering Technologist 2 Education Required: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Engineering Technologist 3 Education Required: Position requires a Bachelor’ Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos.
Position commitment : Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
