Los Alamos National Laboratory Energy Delivery Network Modeling and Optimization Scientist (R&D Scientist 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Scientist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics group (T-5) is looking for outstanding early career scientist and engineer candidates in the fields of applied mathematics, machine learning, computational science, optimization, and control theory. The researcher will perform research that focuses on developing fundamental algorithms that solve difficult problems centered on designing, operating, simulating, and analyzing complex, engineered systems. The candidate is expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment with substantial collaborative research. A successful candidate is expected to publish in peer reviewed journals, present their research at conferences and workshops, and develop projects in optimization, machine learning, and control theory.

This position is part of LANL’s Advanced Network Science Initiative (ANSI) team. ANSI performs basic and applied research focused on modeling and understanding the nation's critical infrastructures, such as electric power and natural gas. Our expertise covers statistics, stochastic methods, machine learning, control theory, dynamical systems, discrete and continuous optimization, statistical physics, and graphical modeling. We ensure the scientific and technological validity of our approaches by working closely with physicists, engineers, mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists, and economists through interdisciplinary collaborations. Our typical customers include DHS, DOE, DOD, and other national laboratories. Our work typically requires close collaborations within and outside the Laboratory. Candidates are expected to support within the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity, Office of Science, and ARPA-E. Programs and projects include control and optimization of networks under uncertainty, analysis of extreme events, design of resilient networks, modeling of interdependent networks, machine learning for infrastructure systems, and fundamentals of optimization and machine learning methods. Selected candidates will work with the team to conduct novel research in the areas listed above and will publish the results in peer-reviewed journals. The candidates will participate in the development of proposals to fund the teams research activities.

Scientist 3 $113,100 - $190,900

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the selected candidate will be expected to lead research projects, including the development of funding through competitive proposals. They will also mentor postdoctoral researchers and junior staff.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Proven publication record in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, optimization, control theory, computational science, or applied mathematics.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative and multi‐disciplinary scientific environment

  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written skills through a record of publications and presentations

    Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3:

    In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

    • Demonstrated success in obtaining funding leading successful competitive research proposals
    • Demonstrated ability in leading small research teams

    Education/Experience at lower level: A Ph.D. in computer science, statistical physics, operations research, applied mathematics, or a related field.

    Education/Experience at higher level: A Ph.D. in computer science, statistical physics, operations research, applied mathematics, or a related field and a minimum of 6 years of research experience post completion of the Ph.D.

    Desired Skills:

    • Experience in developing fundamental approaches that can be applied to practical science and engineering problems, especially in the context of infrastructure networks
    • Programming experience with Java, C++, Python, MATLAB, or Julia
    • Software engineering experience
    • Mathematical modeling experience with AMPL, GAMS, JuMP, or Pyomo
    • Experience with commercial and open‐source solvers (CPLEX, Gurobi, IPOPT, etc.)
    • Experience in mentoring graduate students or postdocs
    • Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance

      Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
