Los Alamos National Laboratory Electrical System Engineer 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but are not necessarily limited to:
Serve as a contact point for facility electrical engineering matters.
Perform Power System Engineering Studies including Short Circuit, Device Coordination, Equipment Sizing, and Arc Flash for both medium and low voltage equipment.
Develop electrical details, design/analysis calculations, specifications, etc. that incorporate the applicable design requirements for facility projects.
Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer during the development of project deliverables.
Support configuration management of assigned systems and maintain technical baseline.
Conduct assessments of facility electrical systems in support of comprehensive facility health assessments which are used to plan facility upgrade projects.
Troubleshoot facility electrical systems.
Define maintenance requirements.
Prepare corrective maintenance instructions for complex or critical operations.
Support the associated safety analyses and hazard evaluations.
Implement the LANL Conduct of Engineering (COE) Program.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated broad-based, engineering experience with projects involving electrical design for new facilities and facility modifications.
Significant experience with electrical analyses in accordance with the national codes and standards for electrical engineering, including the IBC, NESC, NEC, IEEE, NETA, and NFPA 70E.
Experience working with SKM or ETAP power tools or a similar software package.
Demonstrated experience with the preparation of design/analysis calculations, specifications, details, drawings, as well as the preparation of special tests and inspections for the electrical discipline.
Knowledge of electrical engineering, principles, design guides and appropriate standards. Knowledge of engineering work planning coordination.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.
Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to electrical design implementation
Professional Engineering certification.
Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures.
Working knowledge of Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) to include sizing and programming.
Working knowledge of Lightning Protection Systems (LPS), backup facility power generation, and Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS).
Experience with low voltage equipment maintenance such as breakers, panels, and bus ducts.
Experience with supporting the replacement of facility mechanical equipment such as boilers, air handler units, fans, and pumps.
This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
