Los Alamos National Laboratory Ecosystem Functional Signatures Postdoctoral Research Associate in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

We are seeking a postdoctoral research assistant who will join the Ecosystem Functional Signatures Collaboration to perform cross-cutting research for remote proliferation detection, using both computational and experimental approaches. This collaboration comprises researchers from the Safeguards Science and Technology group (NEN-1), which works to safeguard nuclear materials by developing techniques and systems for nondestructive assay of nuclear and hazardous material; the Earth System Observations group (EES-14), which performs laboratory and field-based experimental and observational biogeoscience research, data analysis and modeling; and the Statistical Sciences group (CCS-6), which develops and collaborates on the application of statistical methods across a wide range of high-impact science, technology, and engineering areas.

You will contribute to collaborative projects with a focus on shared outcomes, publish results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present your work at professional conferences. The term of the appointment is two (2) years, with the option to extend to a third year depending on performance and funding availability.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience conducting experimental R&D in physical science, engineering or environmental sciences or demonstrated experience in implementing data analytics methods in diverse datasets.

  • Record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals

  • Excellent writing and communication skills, as evidenced by publications & oral presentations at conferences and the cover letter

  • Self-motivated and effective team worker

Education/Experience:

Candidates must have received a Ph.D. within the last five years in a STEM field, or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in computational methods such as optimization and machine learning

  • Experience programming in either Python, R, Fortran, Matlab, or a similar language

  • Ability to be innovative in leveraging skills (such as the analysis of large data sets or expertise in programming) to solve difficult technical problems.

  • Demonstrated experience in material science and/or physical characterization methods

  • Experience with vegetation, fire or crop modeling

The position does not require a security clearance. However, ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance is desirable.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. However, ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance is desirable. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
