What You Will Do
Join our world class team of Earth scientists! The Earth and Environmental Sciences Division (EES) at LANL is seeking a dynamic, innovative individual to lead the Earth Systems Observations group, EES-14. EES-14 is a diverse Group of about 100 staff, post-docs, and students with an annual budget of approximately $50M. EES-14performs laboratory and field-based experimental and observational research, and associated data analysis and modeling encompassing the geologic, geochemical, hydrological, ecological, landscape, and atmospheric sciences.
The Group Leader provides leadership in technical and programmatic activities and champions EES-14 capabilities and personnel. The specific responsibilities for this position include fiscal oversight, research program development, oversight and technical development of laboratory facilities, resource and space allocation, safety and compliance, as well as personnel management including employee evaluations, promotions, and salary management. The Group Leader is responsible for maintaining a strong safety and security envelope while cultivating a culture of respect for safety and security within the Group. The successful candidate will work to ensure that the Group has a comprehensive, integrated set of core-competencies to deliver on existing programs and commitments as well as positioning the Group to meet emerging challenges and develop new programs through effective partnering with peers across the Laboratory and at other institutions. S/he also works with the Division Leader to determine organizational objectives, implement and disseminate lab policies, and delegate assignments. The Group Leader is supported by a Deputy Group Leader, five Team Leaders, two administrative assistants and a financial analyst.

Leadership and Management
Demonstrated scientific leadership and management of a research-oriented organization, including satisfying customers in a timely manner with sound programmatic and technical decisions,management of resources, and knowledge of the operational standards needed to maintain safe and secure group operations.
Experience in the business operations of a group or team, which may include financial stewardship, budgeting, and/or forecasting.
Experience in personnel management, which may include career development, goal setting, mentoring and motivating employees, resolving conflicts, andcommitment to diversity in the workplace.
Strategy, Program Development, and Technical Credibility
Demonstrated technical accomplishments in one or more of the EES-14 relevant areas of research and operations (see the list in the “Where You Will Work” section below).
Experience coordinating program development, which may involve familiarity with DOE, NNSA, DoD, or other federal or private sponsors and in representing programs internally and externally.
Experience conducting strategic planning,which may include establishing a scientific visionand identifying challenges and opportunities, fostering technical capability, and improving infrastructure and facilities.
Collaboration and Communication
Demonstrated record of effective teamwork, which may include working with multi-disciplinary teams, building consensus, and/or working across organizational boundaries to achieve institutional objectives.
Ability to identify, condense, and communicate essential information at various technical levels to staff, sponsors, and stakeholders.
Education, Experience, and Clearance
Position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Geoscience or a related field and 8 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position. A PhD in Geoscience or related field is strongly preferred.
Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship.
Experience working in and managing field-based programs and/or analytical laboratories with chemical, electrical, pressure and/or radiological safety requirements.
Demonstrated ability in technical writing, including reports, proposals, and presentations.
Knowledge of and networks with external sponsoring organizations (DOE, NNSA, DoD, DHS, other government agencies, Industry, etc.) and with existing or potential external or internal collaborators.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Where You Will Work
The EES-14 Group is characterized by a balance of basic and applied research, leading to the development of novel and integrated capabilities that can be utilized to address practical problems for a variety of sponsors in DOE, NNSA, other federal agencies, and a variety of industries.Experimental facilities include a well-equipped suite of geochemical analytical labs for the characterization of rocks and fluids; high pressure experimental equipment; a suite of radioactive-capable labs for actinide studies at in-situ conditions; triaxial core flood with in-situ tomography and a high-pressure load frame for studies of rock mechanical behavior under stress; high pressure-temperature microfluidics stage; light stable isotope mass spectrometers and peripherals; and a large greenhouse for plant physiological research. The Group conducts scientific research and technical work across all classification levels.The work conducted in each of the five teams within the EES-14 Group are summarized below:
Atmosphere, Climate, and Ecosystem Science
Monitoring and attribution of atmospheric greenhouse gases; absorbing aerosol chemistry and climate impacts
Hydrological, geochemical and geomorphological response to regional and global climate change;
Vegetation-climate interactions, plant stress responses, and use of plant-microbiome interactions to improve plant stress tolerance
Geology and Geospatial Analysis
Observation and analysis of geological controls on fracturing and gas migration associated with underground nuclear explosions and geologic repositories
Complex, multi-modality geospatial analysis of natural and anthropogenic phenomena, including analysis of temporal change
Field-based geologic signature analyses using a range of novel sensors and deployment systems
Investigation of fundamental environmental behavior of nuclides and other non-radioactive contaminants or tracers, including laboratory- and field-scale observation of species reactivity and transport
Characterization of geomaterials using advanced synchrotron X-ray and neutron techniques for applications including unconventional hydrocarbon production and geologic CO 2 sequestration
Actinide chemistry at elevated temperatures and pressures, including thermodynamics of solid phases and aqueous species
Geomaterials and Geochemistry Research Lab
Subsurface science related to rock fracturing and fluid flow in fractured reservoirs
Repository and borehole conditions of high temperature and pressure fluid
Carbon sequestration and wellbore integrity
Field Instrument Deployments and Operations.
Supports a DOE scientific user facility charged with making detailed observations about the earth’s atmosphere
Operations and logistics for the global deployment of atmospheric sciences observation instruments and equipment
