Los Alamos National Laboratory (Dimensional Metrology Engineer) R&D Engineer 4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The selected individual will lead engineering R&D activities and operations in support of quality engineering. The individual may be expected to develop robust processes; to develop Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) fixtures and programs to meet quality control standards and make suggestions with regard to procedures, standards and equipment to facilitate work and maintain product quality; lead corrective and preventive action activities, and perform root cause analysis; and apply broad and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the preparation of complex engineering analyses. The selected candidate will also be expected to apply knowledge of 3-D design and modeling capabilities; identify system-integration activities within and across disciplines; lead projects and supervise the work of others; and identify and manage work process improvements to meet customer needs. The candidate will interface with nuclear facility operators to coordinate needs that arise from operating in a nuclear safety envelope.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in designing, planning, and executing research and development projects and/or new product initiatives.

  • Providing leadership in identifying, promoting, and developing new technical capabilities and leading decision-making based on technical expertise.

  • Expert knowledge and experience with CMM programming and operation for parts with complex features and tight tolerances.

  • Advanced knowledge of, and experience with, manufacturing inspection including blueprint and drawing reading GD&T, surface plane inspection, and inspection equipment.

  • Broad knowledge of industry and regulatory standards.

  • Demonstrated success in effectively communicating (both oral and written) with diverse employees and organizations at all levels (e.g., technicians, process owners, product/quality/design engineers, project managers, management, and federal sponsors).

  • DOE Order 426.2 requires a BS, 2 years of job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Desired Skills:

  • Advanced level experience using Quindos® CMM programming language (highly desirable)

  • Experience working in a nuclear or other regulated, high-hazard facility.

  • Experience in user calibration of CMMs to ISO standards.

  • An active DOE Q clearance.

  • Experience and knowledge of weapons design and manufacturing.


  • BS degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution with preference to Mechanical, Inspection or Material Engineering, and 10 years’ experience.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

The Production Agency Quality organization provides the Quality Engineering and Product Inspection expertise in support of the diverse manufacturing assignments within the Weapons Production (WP) The goal is to exceed internal and external customer requirements by facilitating effective implementation of defined applicable quality standards into product manufacturing processes. The diverse project support base includes but is not limited to; weapons, weapons experiments, MOX fuel, NASA power sources, radiological materials production and various “strategic partnerships” projects.
