Los Alamos National Laboratory Detonator Manufacturing Procurement & Facilities Manager (Manufacturing Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Detonator Support is an operational support group focused on the development and execution of support systems and services, for the Detonator Production Agency (PA). The Group manages the high explosives inventory and supports shop floor control, procurement, equipment maintenance, packaging and transportation (P&T), warehouse management, production planning, document control, records management and facility interface.

The successful candidate will provide leadership and management for a group of professionals, focused in Procurement, Supply Chain development and Facilities maintenance in support of the detonator manufacturing processes. The successful candidates responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the evaluation and coordination of material requirements to ensure a controlled flow of approved materials timed to meet production/customer requirements.

  • Expand the Supply Chain by locating, evaluating and working with the Institution approving new vendors, providing status updates on material availability and potential production problems.

  • Control and analysis of multiple and complex bill of materials in an MRP system.

  • Scheduling of personnel and equipment management of end item deliverables based on the master production schedule.

  • Coordinating interdepartmental activities with quality assurance, manufacturing, and purchasing.

  • Propose and lead solutions to mitigate any work stoppage, and interfacing with internal and external customers.

The successful candidate will need to work with several other technical organizations within the Associate Laboratory Directorate of Weapons Production (ALDWP) including facility operations, program and engineering to achieve its goals and deliverables.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience in a management/leadership role; with demonstrated proven ability to effectively lead, manage, supervise, and develop employees.

  • Demonstrated experience with procurement processes and methodologies.

  • Experience in supply chain management and vendor development.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in leading organizational processes and creating a culture of continuous improvement using Lean, Kaizen, Six Sigma, and other CI methodologies/tools.

  • A successful record of promoting teamwork, consensus building, mentoring, and motivating peers and subordinates and working across organizational lines.

  • Experience with talent management as it relates to coaching, career planning, performance management, leadership development, training, and succession planning

  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and written skills; demonstrated by relationships built, seminars, briefings, presentations, and publications.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Managing manufacturing operations

  • Demonstrated experience with work planning methodologies, systems and tools.

  • Demonstrated experience interacting with DOE/NNSA.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Where You Will Work

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

The Detonator PA is located at Technical Area 22 (TA-22), at the foot of the Pajarito Skill Hill, part of the Jemez mountains. Responsible for the manufacturing of a wide variety of War Reserve (WR) and experimental detonators for use by diverse set of customers. The Detonator PA also performs Detonator surveillance to support early identification of stockpile aging concerns and strives to predict the lifetime of weapon components and materials. The Detonator PA plans to build a large number of detonators each year for various weapon systems and experiments, and is considered a growth area for the Laboratory. Both manufacturing and surveillance processes are conducted at the Laboratory’s Technical Area 22 (TA-22).

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
