What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or R&D Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Detonator Science and Technology (Q‐6) Group is oﬀering an exciting opportunity to be a part of the Detonator Component Engineering team. We are seeking an enthusiastic and driven individual who can bring skills in engineering design, project management, and experimentation. You must be capable of working independently on complex technical problems associated with the active nuclear weapon stockpile detonator programs and lead Product Realization teams while actively and openly contributing to the Q-6 component engineering team.
You will work with customers and collaborators to ensure programs are supported and programmatic deliverables are met. Strong documentation (writing) skills and ability to present technical information to a wide audience through formal and informal interactions are crucial in this role. You will work daily in a classified setting and must demonstrate a strong commitment towards national security.
R&D Engineer 2 $94,100 - $155,700
As an R&D Engineer 2, you will be part of a team with responsibilities for the design, testing (material, aging, and performance), qualification, and production of detonators and detonator cable assemblies. This includes maintaining and revising design definition for the product, and ensuring that changes are socialized with the production agencies (Kansas City National Security Complex, Pantex Plant, Los Alamos National Laboratory Detonator Production) to assess production impacts prior to formal release. You will serve as the point-of-contact for the assigned product line and as the principal interface with the production agencies supporting that product’s manufacturing.
R&D Engineer 3 $113,100 - $190,900
In addition to what was outlined at the R&D Engineer 2 level, at the R&D Engineer 3 level you will serve as the LANL Lead for the product line; interfacing with the several production agencies as well as Sandia National Laboratories, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the NNSA Federal Program Manager. You will mentor junior engineers on the technical aspects of detonator design definition, the 6.x Phase process, and assist other component design engineers in meeting Laboratory deliverables. You will serve as the design agency lead on Product Realization Teams. R&D Engineers at this level represent Q-6 and the program with the respective LANL program managers to secure funding and establish schedules to meet annual deliverables for the program. The R&D Engineer 3 is expected to be the Laboratory expert on their component and to develop competency in hydrodynamic, mechanical, electrical, and chemical modeling of their assigned product(s).
The Detonator Science and Technology Group (Q‐6) is the design authority for detonators on Los Alamos nuclear weapon stockpile systems. Q‐6 provides engineering and design support to the NNSA production plants during production of War Reserve detonators, assesses, and reports on surveillance data for each stockpile detonator.

Minimum Job Requirements for the R&D Engineer 2 Level:
Proven experience in electrical, chemical, or mechanical engineering disciplines. Candidate must have the ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical engineering design drawings, including GD&T. Knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing designs for fabrication and testing of products, and using statistical analysis techniques. Experience with computer programming languages; experience with Matlab, C/C++ preferred. Knowledge of application of scientific methods and engineering discipline-relevant standards
Communication and Teamwork
You must be able to confidently represent the organization in interactions with Laboratory personnel, external customers, and personnel from across the Nuclear Security Enterprise. Demonstrated ability to effectively present work objectives and results to all levels of internal and external stakeholders. Experience working in a team environment as demonstrated by successful implementation of design requirements

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Extensive and demonstrable technical knowledge, experience, and ability to provide technical leadership on product designs and testing (e.g., multi-component assemblies, characterization, assessment, or multi-parameter testing). Experience leading efforts in designing, planning, and executing projects associated with mature products. Knowledge of and experience with simulations using COMSOL, PSPICE, or other relevant modeling software.
Communication and Teamwork
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of internal and external peers, customers, and stakeholders. Ability to effectively accomplish work without considerable direction; expect significant latitude in determining objectives of assignments, and determine the methods and procedures needed for new assignments
Education/Experience at the R&D Engineer 2 level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at the R&D Engineer 3 level: Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 yearsor more of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Experience with quality assurance standards such as NQA-1, NAP-401.A, or DOE Order 414.D
Knowledge and experience with execution of the NNSA Phase 6.x Process and Defense Programs Business Process System (DPBPS) requirements
Coursework, experience, or demonstrable knowledge of shock, detonation, or explosive‐initiation physics
Know-how to develop design of experiments for material and product-related accelerated aging studies; execute and interpret the results of such
Knowledge of initiation systems particular to nuclear weapon applications
Proficiency with PTC CREO parametric modeling software
Knowledge of and experience relative to uncertainty quantification
Demonstrated experience in secure work environment or working with sensitive or classified information
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos.
